You're paying for the algorithm, not the songs

Spotify is still the default. At the end of June 2026 it had 777 million monthly users and 300 million paying subscribers. The catalogue isn't why: every major service carries more or less the same songs. People stay for the personalisation. That means the Home feed, Discover Weekly, the Made for You mixes, and a Wrapped that feels like a mirror. Add podcasts, video podcasts and audiobooks, and Spotify is less a music app than the soundtrack running under your whole day.

That matters here. What you're really buying is a service that learns you, and a shared setup is the first thing that muddles what it learns.

What changed between May and September 2026

Reliability slipped. Users reported widespread outages on 12 May, 16 June and 14 July 2026. On 5 August 2026 an outage lasted about two hours. No service is immune, but four noticeable breaks in four months is worth knowing about.

August 2026: after a long backlash over AI-generated 'artists', Spotify introduced an 'AI Persona' label. Music from those profiles is kept out of editorial and algorithmic recommendations unless you follow the artist yourself. The labels started showing up in mid-September. Separately, the anger over its ads and its leadership's investments, which had led some artists to pull their music, hasn't gone away.

Also in August 2026: Playlist Notes let you add context to the songs in your playlists. It followed the per-track notes launched in July. A weekly 'Concerts Near You' playlist was added as well.

September 2026: Taste Profile arrived in the US, still in beta, for Premium users aged 18 and over. You tell the algorithm in plain words what to change, and it adjusts your recommendations within hours.

Who sharing suits, and who should pay full price

A shared plan suits someone who mostly wants ad-free listening and offline downloads, and can live with a bit of uncertainty. Be clear about what you're getting into. Spotify's Family and Duo plans are meant for people who live at the same address, and Spotify can ask members to verify it. A seat bought from strangers can conflict with those terms. The realistic risk is that you get removed from the plan and lose access partway through, with no complaint to Spotify that will get you anywhere.

Pay full price if Spotify is your main way of hearing music and podcasts, if your years of playlists and history matter to you, or if you want the new personalisation tools on an account that is only yours. Spotify's own write-up of Taste Profile gives the example of a teenager's car playlists messing up a parent's recommendations. Sharing makes that worse, not better.

Before you buy

Ask whether you get your own account on the plan or a login to someone else's. Only your own account keeps your playlists, history and recommendations separate.

Ask what happens if Spotify asks you to confirm your address, and whether the seller will replace your seat or refund you if you're removed.

Check your market. Since November 2025, India, Indonesia, the UAE, Saudi Arabia and South Africa have had Premium split into tiers, with lossless audio and the AI features only in the top one. Find out exactly which tier you're joining.

Check which features you actually need. Some new ones, like Taste Profile, are Premium-only, age-limited and not available in every country yet.

How we read these

Every figure here is read from the seller's own page when the site is built, and stamped with the date it was read. Nothing is estimated and nothing is carried over from yesterday. When a price cannot be read, the row says so instead of showing a zero.
