Spotify's Reported $250M Rogan Deal: Who's Paying for It?

Spotify re-signed Joe Rogan for a reported $250M, but the show isn't exclusive anymore. Who pays: advertisers, or the people who keep getting price hikes?

Short answer

Advertisers are meant to pay for this deal. Premium subscribers are paying for something else, and they also sit through the ads.On October 8, 2026, Spotify announced a new multi-year licensing agreement for The Joe Rogan Experience. Reports describe it as a licensing and ad-sales deal. The Wall Street Journal, as cited by Investing.com, estimates it at about $250 million, a figure Spotify hasn't confirmed. New episodes will keep coming out on Spotify and on other platforms. Nothing in the announcement or the coverage ties the deal to subscription prices. Still, Spotify's own support page says Premium subscribers can hear Spotify ads on audio podcasts, so subscribers end up paying a monthly fee and hearing the ads that are supposed to fund the deal.

What Spotify actually announced

Spotify's newsroom post is short. It announces a new multi-year licensing agreement, says new JRE episodes will keep arriving weekly on Spotify and other platforms, and says the show is the most-followed on Spotify with 18 million followers since the partnership began in 2020. Rogan says he's happy to continue for years. Jordan Newman, Spotify's head of content partnerships, says "Joe has built something incredibly enduring." The post gives no dollar amount and no contract length.

The details come from the press. According to The Wall Street Journal, as reported by Investing.com, the new deal covers licensing and ad sales, carries terms similar to the previous contract, and leaves Rogan and his team in full editorial control. Investing.com also recaps the history. The 2020 deal made the show a Spotify exclusive for a reported $100 million-plus. The early-2024 renewal opened it up to YouTube and other platforms. DraftKings Network's write-up likewise lists Apple Podcasts and YouTube among the places the show stays available.

Meanwhile, on your bill

SoundGuys reports that Spotify confirmed another US Premium price increase in January 2026. It took effect with billing dates throughout February and applied to the Individual, Duo, Family and Student plans. Spotify said the change lets it "continue offering the best possible experience and benefit artists." SoundGuys counts earlier US increases in July 2023 and July 2024, which makes this three in about two and a half years.

Premium doesn't make podcasts ad-free either. Spotify's support page says Premium subscribers get video podcasts without Spotify ads but may still hear creator sponsorships. On audio podcasts, both Premium and free listeners may get Spotify ads and creator sponsorships.

Our take: Spotify is paying exclusive-era money for a show that isn't exclusive

Here's the uncomfortable part. In 2020 Spotify paid for a moat: if you wanted Rogan, you came to Spotify. That moat has been gone since 2024, and on these reported terms Spotify has signed up to keep paying for a show anyone can watch on YouTube. Spotify is renting the ad inventory and the follower count, and that's a much less exciting purchase than the headline number makes it sound. Calling it a 'halo effect' doesn't change that.

Is your Premium money subsidizing it? Honestly, nobody outside Spotify can trace that, and anyone who says they can is guessing. The ad-sales structure suggests advertisers are supposed to carry the cost. But the money all ends up in one company, and that company keeps raising prices while saying it's for artists, then spends nine figures (reportedly) on a talk show. Subscribers are right to roll their eyes. What annoys me most isn't the deal. It's that Premium still doesn't promise you an ad-free podcast.

Overrated: the idea that Spotify 'won' Rogan again. Underrated: how much Spotify needs podcast ad revenue to compete with YouTube, which, unlike Spotify, never had to pay for exclusivity.

Why this matters here: under Spotify's terms, price changes are communicated in advance and take effect at the start of your next subscription period. If you keep using the service after that, you've accepted the new price. The same terms say Spotify has no obligation to provide any specific content. So no single show is guaranteed to stay on your plan, whatever Spotify paid for it.

What to do if this deal bugs you

  • Read the next price-change notice Spotify sends. Under its terms, changes apply from your next billing period, so you have time to decide.
  • If you mostly use Spotify for podcasts, remember that Premium may not remove ads on audio podcasts, according to Spotify Support.
  • JRE also stays available outside Spotify, so a Spotify subscription isn't required to follow the show.
  • Judge Premium on music, downloads and the features you actually use, not on a podcast deal.
