The short answer
One comeback album did half the work. The fans did the rest.On October 16, 2026, Big Hit Music announced that BTS had become the first group to pass 10 billion Spotify streams in a single year. The main driver was 'Arirang', the band's fifth studio album, released on March 20. According to Korea JoongAng Daily, it had passed 5 billion Spotify streams by Wednesday, the most of any album released on Spotify this year. The same report says BTS's total rose 122 percent from last year's 4.5 billion. Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande and Bad Bunny had already crossed 10 billion as solo artists, but no group had.Source: BTS becomes first group to top 10 billion Spotify streams in a year (Korea JoongAng Daily) · 2026-10-17; Korea Herald report on BTS's 10 billion annual Spotify streams · 2026-10-17
What actually drove the record
Start with the timing. 'Arirang' came out on March 20, and the Irish Times described it as the end of a hiatus of more than three years while the members did South Korea's mandatory military service. Pent-up demand showed up right away. The Korea Herald reports that on release day all 14 tracks, including the instrumental 'No. 29', took the top 14 spots on Spotify's Daily Top Songs Global chart. Sports Kyunghyang reports that title track 'SWIM' led that chart with about 14 million streams, the biggest single-day total for any 2026 song.

Then it stayed big for months. Sports Kyunghyang reports that all 14 tracks have each passed 200 million plays and 'SWIM' is close to 1 billion. 'Arirang' is about 2 billion streams ahead of the runner-up, Olivia Rodrigo's 'you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love'. New releases from Bruno Mars and Harry Styles sit around 1 to 2 billion each. A world tour has also kept the album in the spotlight. Korea JoongAng Daily says it started in Goyang on April 9 and has already played Japan, the US, Europe and Latin America. The Korea Herald says the band is in Santiago this week, with Buenos Aires and São Paulo next.

Read the fine print on the numbers
These are Spotify-only figures that BTS's label announced, as reported by Korean press. Other counts measure different things. Bandwagon, citing Luminate, reported 3.8 billion streams for 'Arirang' across Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube Music in its first eight weeks. Don't compare that figure directly with the Spotify totals.

The take: the reunion album is Spotify's most powerful format
Here's the part people will argue about. This record says less about Spotify's algorithm than about how predictable the platform's charts have become. Spotify loves to sell itself as a discovery machine. But the biggest album of the year wasn't discovered by anyone. It was waited for, counted down and streamed by an organised fandom from minute one. A reunion after a long, forced break is the strongest launch an artist can have: years of built-up demand, a set date, and fans who treat streaming as a group project. Is it overrated as a measure of how much people actually listen? Somewhat. Streams count devotion as much as reach. Is it underrated as a measure of power? Definitely. When one album leads the year's runner-up by about 2 billion streams, the Global chart isn't reflecting taste. It's reflecting turnout.
The annoying part for everyone else: if you open Spotify for new music, the charts this year mostly showed you what fandoms had already decided. That's not BTS's fault. It's a reason to rely on your own Release Radar and friends' playlists more than the Global Top 50.
Who this affects, and what to do
What this means for you
- Casual listeners: nothing changes in your app or plan. This is a chart record, not a Spotify feature or policy change.
- Fans streaming for records: play the music normally. Spotify's rules ban bots, scripts and other artificial boosting of play counts.
- Chart watchers: label-announced Spotify totals and Luminate's cross-platform counts measure different things, so keep them separate.
- Concert-goers in South America: the Korea Herald reports live cinema screenings of the Buenos Aires show on Oct. 24 and the São Paulo show on Oct. 30.

Why this matters here: Spotify's guidelines list this among the things users must not do, and specifically mention using 'any bot, script or other automated process'. Spotify's Terms of Use, last updated September 4, 2026, require users to follow those guidelines. Fan streaming parties are fine. Automated tricks to boost numbers are not.
