Short answer

Both services had separate outages on Tuesday, September 29, and both recovered the same morning. Neither company has said what caused its outage.Reuters, citing Downdetector, reported that Spotify's US problems started around 9:30 a.m. ET, with user reports peaking above 19,000. Claude reports began around 10:25 a.m. ET and passed 10,000. Anthropic said the issues affecting Claude, including Claude Code, had been mitigated. Spotify said on X that it was 'aware of some issues.' Both services had recovered by the time Reuters published. If you pay for either one, the terms make clear that a refund for an hour of downtime is unlikely.

That's two apps a lot of people pay for every month, down within about an hour of each other on a weekday morning. Your music stopped and your coding assistant stopped. It's easy to suspect a shared cause, but nobody has reported one. There's no evidence the two outages are linked, and neither company has explained its own.

Spotify: search, playlists and Connect broke

According to Reuters, Downdetector reports for Spotify started around 9:30 a.m. ET, peaked above 19,000 and later fell to about 1,000. 9to5Google put the big wave of reports at around 10 a.m. ET. It reported broken search, failures loading playlists that weren't downloaded, Spotify Connect problems, 'Something went wrong' errors, and some users being logged out and unable to sign back in. Playback that was already running mostly kept going. Spotify's status account posted: 'We're aware of some issues right now and are checking them out!' Spotify gave no cause.

A panicked person jiggles a loose plug as small paper cards flutter off a jukebox-shaped box.
Spotify had trouble on Tuesday morning, with search, playlists and Connect not working properly for many listeners.
A skeptical person holds a large stamp toward a closed service window with its shutter down.
The terms of both services make refunds for a short outage unlikely, so paying subscribers should not count on one.

Claude: errors for about an hour, then sign-in trouble

Anthropic's status page gives the most detailed timeline of the day. It started investigating at 14:21 UTC (10:21 a.m. ET) because of elevated errors on Claude.ai, the desktop and mobile apps, Claude Code and Claude Cowork, and it added API errors a few minutes later. Error rates had dropped substantially by 14:41 UTC. A second problem then hit sign-in, and users were told not to sign out. Most services had recovered by 15:11 UTC. The incident was marked resolved at 16:27 UTC, and the page gives the impact window as 14:00 to 14:59 UTC. 9to5Google reported that single sign-on, Sign in with Apple, new chats, voice, purchases and file uploads were all affected during that second phase.

Check your recent Claude chats

Anthropic's status page warned that some messages sent between 14:00 and 14:59 UTC (10:00–10:59 a.m. ET) may not have been saved. If you were working in Claude during that hour, open those conversations and check that your prompts and replies are there. If anything is missing, re-run it.

Our take: Anthropic handled the communication far better. It posted timestamped updates, gave a clear impact window, told users not to sign out, and admitted messages might have been lost. Spotify posted one cheerful tweet. Both companies are equally silent on the cause, though, and 'mitigated' doesn't explain anything. 9to5Google also counts this as another Claude outage in a busy September. If you pay for Claude Pro or Max to get work done, that pattern matters more than any single hour of downtime.

Paying subscriber? Here's what the terms say

Spotify has no liability to you, nor any obligation to provide a refund to you, in connection with internet or other Spotify Service outages or failures

Spotify Terms of Use (last updated September 4, 2026)

Source: Spotify Terms of Use · 2026-09-30

This clause answers the refund question for Spotify: the terms say an outage doesn't obligate Spotify to refund you. The same terms also warn that the service may have temporary interruptions and is provided 'as is.' Anthropic's consumer terms also provide the service 'as is' and 'as available.' They say payments are non-refundable except as the terms state or the law requires. The listed exceptions, such as a withdrawal right in some countries or Anthropic ending your subscription, don't cover a short outage.

What to do after an outage like this

  • Check the official status source first: status.claude.com for Claude, and Spotify's status account on X for Spotify.
  • If you're signed out, try signing in again now that both companies report recovery.
  • For Claude, check any work from 10:00–10:59 a.m. ET on Sept. 29 for missing messages.
  • Download important Spotify playlists. Downloads keep playing during some server-side problems, and 9to5Google reported that only non-downloaded playlists failed to load.
  • You can contact support to ask for goodwill credit, but the terms don't promise any.

The overrated idea is that a subscription buys you guaranteed uptime. It doesn't, and both companies say so in writing. The underrated habit is keeping an offline backup: downloaded music, and saved copies of work you can't afford to lose. An hour of outage is a small annoyance. Losing something you can't get back is the real cost.
