A shocked person holds an open wallet caught in the jaws of an enormous television.
Disney+ and Hulu ad-free plans are getting more expensive.

Who is affected: US subscribers. According to TechRadar, Disney has not announced price changes for the UK, Europe or Australia. As its reason for the increase, TechRadar quotes Disney saying it continues to 'significantly invest in enhancements to Disney+ — new technology, features, and personalization.' CBS News says existing subscribers will see the new prices starting next month. MacRumors puts it at your next monthly bill. Either way, if you're already subscribed, you still have time to decide before the higher charge.

A resigned viewer faces a cuckoo bird popping out of a television.
The unchanged bundle price makes watching with ads the cheaper choice for viewers who want both services.

The math Disney wants you to do

Using the reported prices: the ad-supported Disney+/Hulu bundle ($12.99) costs 50 cents more than ad-supported Disney+ alone ($12.49). The ad-free bundle ($21.99) costs 50 cents more than ad-free Disney+ alone ($21.49). Paying for both ad-free services separately would cost $42.98 a month. Going from the ad-free bundle to the ad-supported bundle saves $9 a month.

Our take: freezing the ad bundle wasn't generous. It was the point of the whole increase. Disney raised the ad-free price by $2 to $2.50 and left the one plan that bundles two services with ads alone. That's a clear push toward ads. The price of watching without ads is now 'premium,' and the ad-supported bundle is being set up as the plan most people will end up on. Ad-free standalone Disney+ at $21.49 is the most overpriced plan in this lineup. If you're paying that for only one service, you're paying extra for the Disney+ name.

Switch to ads, keep ad-free, or cancel?

Pick your lane

  • You watch both Disney+ and Hulu and can put up with ads: switch to the $12.99 ad-supported bundle. Among the plans in this article, it's the cheapest way to get both.
  • You watch only Disney+ with ads: for 50 cents more, the ad-supported bundle adds Hulu.
  • You're on standalone ad-free Disney+ or Hulu: the ad-free bundle costs 50 cents more and includes the other service. Don't keep paying for just one.
  • You watch mostly one show or season: cancel after it ends and resubscribe when something new comes out. Cancellation takes effect at the end of your billing period, so you keep what you've already paid for.
  • You're billed through a phone carrier or another partner: check with them how any plan change or cancellation works before you do it.

Why this matters: the same agreement says you can cancel any time before the end of your current billing period, and the cancellation takes effect at the end of that period. The Hulu agreement on the same archive page says the same thing. So if you cancel before the higher price starts, you still get the time you've already paid for. This quote comes from Disney's archived agreement page. Check the current version in your account before you rely on the exact wording.
