What it is

A footnote machine that now wants to run your errands

Most people still open Perplexity for one thing: a fast answer with sources attached. They use it to check a claim, compare products, size up a competitor or catch up on what the web said this week. That part is still its strength.

The company's pitch has moved on, though. Its Computer agent now handles multi-step jobs: research first, then build a file, run scheduled tasks, or act through connectors to your email and cloud drives. The Comet browser brings the same agent into shopping and filling in forms. If all you want is answers with footnotes, you're paying for a lot of machinery you'll never touch.

What changed since spring

May 2026: Pro subscribers reported hitting advanced-model caps much sooner, with no warning. Perplexity said the tighter limits affected accounts tied to promotional codes, and blamed fraud and unauthorized resale of those codes. If you buy through a reseller, read that twice. Also in May 2026, CNN sued Perplexity for copyright infringement.

July 2026: Claude Opus 5 arrived in Search and Computer, a Check Sources feature started testing claims against the evidence, and the Brain memory feature expanded to Max subscribers. A court also let Reddit's scraping-circumvention claims go ahead.

August 2026: an appeals court lifted Amazon's injunction against Comet's shopping agent. GPT-5.6 models came in, Grok 4.6 reached Pro and Max, and you can now email a task to Computer.

September 2026: Effort Mode arrived, running from Light to Ultra, along with GPT-6 Astra for eligible Pro and Max users and Hybrid Computer on Mac. HP announced that it will preinstall Perplexity. The Dow Jones lawsuit's deadlines were pushed back again. The product keeps growing while its sourcing model stays under legal fire.

Shared seat or your own account

A shared plan suits the casual user: a student, an occasional researcher, or someone checking whether Pro beats the free tier, who never types anything sensitive. Be clear about the rules, though. Perplexity treats an account as personal, and its own help pages say sharing breaks its terms and can get the account suspended or terminated. The May crackdown shows it actively goes after resold access. If that happens, you could lose access mid-term, get lower limits than you expected, or have your threads seen by strangers. That risk is yours.

Pay full price if you do client work, upload confidential files, connect your email or drive, lean on Deep Research or Computer every day, or can't afford to lose your history overnight.

Before you buy

Ask exactly what you get: your own login or a seat on someone else's account, and whether other people can see your history.

Ask what happens if the account gets limited or suspended: whether you get a replacement or a refund, and how quickly.

Use the free tier on your real tasks for a week first. If you never hit a wall, you don't need Pro.

Never link work accounts or upload anything confidential to a login you don't control.
