Gemini in 2026: a work tool for people who live in Google
Nobody should buy Gemini because it tops a leaderboard for a week. Every major lab now ships new models every few weeks, so no lead lasts. The reason to pay is that Gemini sits inside Gmail, Docs, Android and Chrome, and it is strongest with big piles of material: long PDFs, research sweeps with Deep Research, lecture notes turned into quizzes, and images and video. If your day doesn't run through Google, most of what makes Pro worth having disappears.
What changed since May
May 2026: at I/O, Google dropped fixed daily prompt counts. Usage is now compute-based and refreshes every five hours until you hit a weekly cap. Complex prompts, heavy features and long chats use it up faster. Pro gets four times the standard limit, and a new, cheaper Ultra tier now sits between Pro and the top Ultra plan. Heavy users called this a quiet downgrade.
July 2026: Gemini 3.6 Flash became the app's everyday model, and Mac users got voice control through the Fn key.
August 2026: Gemini 3.7 Flash arrived, Google said the app passed one billion monthly users, and eligible college students got a free AI plan. Users also reported outages on 14 and 18 August.
September 2026: a Windows app shipped. Notebooks gained an audio recorder, live voice chat with your sources and short video overviews.
Who a shared plan suits, and who should pay full price
A shared plan fits light, occasional users: someone who wants Deep Research a few times a month or help drafting emails, and who can live with limits. The weekly cap is now shared compute, so every extra person on the plan eats into what's left for you.
Be clear about what you're buying. Google's approved way to split a plan is its own family-group feature. Sharing a login or reselling access can conflict with Google's terms. The risks are real: the account can be restricted or shut down, access can end mid-subscription, and on a shared login other people may see your chat history. Stay within Google's terms. If Gemini is essential to your work, if you handle client or personal data, or if you regularly hit limits, pay for your own plan.
