Short answer

Yes, Stranger Things' creative core is leaving Netflix, but slowly. The show itself isn't going anywhere.Shawn Levy and his company 21 Laps have signed an overall TV deal with Disney's 20th Television. It starts in October 2027 and ends a run at Netflix that began in 2017. The Duffer Brothers signed a four-year Paramount deal back in August 2025, which took effect when their Netflix deal ended in April 2026. Per TheWrap, Stranger Things and its spinoff stay at Netflix, and Variety reports Levy will keep working with the Duffers on the franchise. Nothing you watch today disappears because of this. The real question is where Netflix's next Stranger Things comes from.

What actually happened

TheWrap reports that Disney got Levy in a competitive situation, with Dana Walden leading the deal. Under it, 21 Laps will develop and produce series across Disney Entertainment's platforms and brands, starting in October 2027. Levy is no stranger to Disney: he directed Deadpool & Wolverine, and TheWrap lists Star Wars: Starfighter and Marvel's Ghost Rider as his upcoming Disney films. Beyond Stranger Things, 21 Laps made All the Light We Cannot See and The Perfect Couple for Netflix. In Levy's own statement, quoted by Variety, he says he will "forever cherish the incredible ride 21 Laps has had with Netflix."

The creators behind Stranger Things signed with other studios, but the show itself is staying on Netflix.

The Duffers left first. Variety reported in August 2025 that Matt and Ross Duffer had signed a four-year exclusive Paramount deal centred on large-scale films. That deal reunites them with Cindy Holland, who greenlit Stranger Things at Netflix. Even so, they kept Netflix projects: The Boroughs, Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen, and plans for more Stranger Things stories.

Netflix now leans on existing franchises, so keep your plan while they last and check for new hits before paying.

Our take: Netflix is renting its franchises now, not building them

Let's be blunt. Two of the three names most closely tied to Netflix's biggest original hit now have their main contracts somewhere else. Netflix will say Stranger Things is staying, and that's true. It's also beside the point. Overall deals are bets on what a team makes next, not on what it already made. Netflix is keeping the old show while Paramount and Disney get the next ones. If you pay for Netflix for the next phenomenon rather than for rewatches, that should bother you.

The overrated argument is that Netflix 'doesn't need' star producers because the algorithm and its huge budget will just make more hits. Stranger Things wasn't a spreadsheet result. A particular executive bet on particular creators, and that executive now runs streaming at Paramount. The underrated argument is that Disney doesn't need 21 Laps to win anything. It needs Levy's knack for making expensive things feel crowd-pleasing, and that's exactly what Netflix will miss.

Fair counterpoint

Talent moves around constantly in Hollywood, and the Disney deal doesn't start until October 2027. For about a year, 21 Laps is still a Netflix supplier. Collider calls the Ali Hazelwood adaptation Deep End possibly one of Levy's last Netflix projects. That's a goodbye, but it isn't an empty one.

What subscribers should actually do

A sensible checklist

  • Don't cancel over this. Nothing announced removes Stranger Things or current 21 Laps shows from Netflix.
  • Keep an eye on the Duffers' remaining Netflix projects (The Boroughs, Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen) and any Stranger Things spinoff news.
  • Judge Netflix in late 2027 and 2028 by whether it launches new originals at Stranger Things scale, not by how big its catalogue is.
  • If your main reason to subscribe is one creator, follow that creator, and subscribe month to month.

Netflix's own terms make month-to-month the sensible stance. They say you can cancel at any time from the Account page, and that the catalogue changes over time, as the quote below shows.

The content that may be available will vary by geographic location, may be limited by law or by the rights that our third-party content providers grant to us, and will change from time to time.

Why that line matters here: Netflix promises you access to a catalogue that changes, not to any particular creator's future work. When the people behind your favourite show sign elsewhere, their next show goes with them. Your subscription doesn't.
