Netflix just published box office grosses for the first time, for La Bola Negra. The number that matters to subscribers is the 47-day wait.

Short answer
For a few prestige titles, yes. You'll wait longer, and La Bola Negra is the first test.Netflix has released box office numbers for the first time, for La Bola Negra. The film opened in US theaters on Oct. 16 with a 47-day exclusive run, the longest Netflix has ever given a film. It reaches Netflix on Dec. 2. Most Netflix movies still go straight to the service. A small group of big titles is moving to a theaters-first model, so subscribers will wait for them.Source: TheWrap: Netflix to Report Box Office Numbers for the First Time Starting This Fall · 2026-10-19; Screen Daily: Netflix expands US theatrical release for awards push La Bola Negra by three weeks · 2026-10-19
What happened this weekend
IndieWire reported on Sunday, Oct. 18, that La Bola Negra made $277,500 on its opening weekend, playing in four theaters in New York and Los Angeles. That works out to $69,375 per screen, which IndieWire calls the second-highest per-screen average ever for a non-English-language film. Netflix had never published these numbers before. It kept them private even for theatrical runs of films like Roma, The Irishman and Glass Onion, according to TheWrap. TheWrap, crediting Variety for breaking the story in September, reported that Netflix would publish grosses for a few theatrical releases.

The film is already a hit in Spain. Screen Daily reports it passed €25m there after its third weekend. It is the country's International Feature Oscar entry and won the Toronto People's Choice Award. Netflix has also said it is pulling in younger audiences: IndieWire reports that 51% of the opening crowd was under 35.

The window got longer, and earlier
This window was planned, not stretched after a strong opening. According to Screen Daily's August report, Netflix moved the US theatrical opening up from Nov. 6 to Oct. 16. That added three weeks in theaters, and the streaming date only moved two days earlier, to Dec. 2. The result was 47 days of theaters only. In other words, Netflix chose to make the wait longer before any box office numbers came in.

More films are getting the same treatment. TheWrap reports that David Fincher's The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth, starring Brad Pitt, gets a two-week IMAX-exclusive run over Thanksgiving. Greta Gerwig's Narnia: The Magician's Nephew opens in theaters in February 2027, and Gerwig made a theatrical release a condition of the deal. IndieWire expects both to open with theatrical windows of about a month or longer.

My take: the grosses are a sideshow. The window is the story
Box office reporters care about the $277,500. Subscribers should care about the 47 days. Netflix built its brand on one promise: pay monthly and the big movie comes to you on day one. Now every theatrical number it publishes turns into a scorecard, and a good score makes the case for a longer wait next time. Theater owners have complained about Netflix's short windows for years, and TheWrap describes the relationship as thawing. That thaw is not happening for your benefit. A 47-day window is still shorter than the old studio standard, but a subscriber would be wrong to read it as a ceiling. Treat it as a starting point.
The overrated reaction is calling this the end of Netflix as a streamer. TheWrap reports that Netflix expects to put only a few films in theaters each year, while other major studios release 15 or more. Your Tuesday-night thrillers aren't going anywhere. What's underrated is the change in which titles you're actually paying for. If the prestige films, the ones that win awards and get talked about, show up on Netflix weeks after everyone else has seen them, the subscription starts to feel like the second-run cinema.

Netflix Terms of Use (Last Updated: April 10, 2026)Source: Netflix Terms of Use · 2026-10-19
This is why the clause matters here. Netflix's terms don't promise you any title on any particular date. They also say available content varies by location, depends on the rights Netflix holds, and will change from time to time. Theatrical windows are a programming decision, and the terms leave Netflix free to make them.

What to do if you want these films
- If you can wait, La Bola Negra is due on Netflix on Dec. 2, per TheWrap and Screen Daily.
- Outside North America, check your country before you count on Netflix. Screen Daily says Netflix holds territory rights including North America, while Elastica Films released the film in Spain and Altitude is releasing it in the UK.
- For Cliff Booth, the reported theatrical run is a two-week IMAX exclusive over Thanksgiving, so expect a short wait before it streams.
- If you only subscribe for one prestige film, wait until its streaming date before you resubscribe, rather than paying for the months it's in theaters.

Timing beats loyalty
My suggestion: as Netflix moves more prestige films to theaters first, put the streaming dates in your calendar and plan your subscription around them. Don't keep paying while the movie you want is still only in theaters.
