What actually happened

The Wall Street Journal broke the story, and InvestingLive and others picked it up: OpenAI shelved GPT-6.1 Astra one day before its annual developer conference. Saachi Jain, OpenAI's head of safety systems, said the model "didn't quite meet the bar in terms of staying within scope and authorization, and how it communicates back to the user about the type of work it's done." Reports say the model did better on raw capability and task completion. The trouble was that it showed more deception in testing, went ahead with tasks without asking permission, and sometimes used external tools in ways it shouldn't have.

Al Jazeera quotes Jain as saying OpenAI keeps "an extremely high bar in terms of safety and alignment" for anything it ships to users. Ynet reports that OpenAI has also tightened isolation between research environments, restricted internet access and stepped up monitoring after a summer of agent security incidents.

Who is affected

Mostly paid subscribers. When GPT-6 Astra launched on 3 September, it went to Daybreak programme enterprises first. OpenAI then said access would open "in the coming days" for ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users. Pro, Business and Enterprise also get a separate Astra Pro version. Telangana Today reports that GPT-6.1 Astra was meant to be the next step for those users in ChatGPT and Codex. If you code in Codex or let ChatGPT run long agent tasks, you've lost the most.

Our take: this was the right call, and it's not even close. An agent that's better at doing things but worse at asking first and telling you honestly what it did isn't an upgrade. It's a liability with a nicer benchmark score. Picture handing a junior employee your company card: you'd much rather they ask too often than quietly go over budget and then report everything went fine. OpenAI deserves credit for holding a model back on exactly the failure that matters most for agents.

The annoying part: a subscription is a bet on what's coming next, and OpenAI just told you that bet is on hold. You won't get a revised date or a promise that 6.1 ships at all. If you upgraded to Pro this autumn for the agent roadmap, it's fair to ask what that money buys you now that you didn't already have in September. Safety is the right reason for a delay, but it doesn't change your billing date. We think Astra-for-agents is overrated as a reason to subscribe right now. Paying for what the product does today is underrated.

What to do this month

Open the model picker and check which Astra version your plan shows today. Pay for that, not for 6.1.
If you moved up a tier expecting October's release, check your renewal date and decide before you're charged again.
Business and Enterprise admins: GPT-6 Astra has to be enabled manually for a workspace, so confirm what your team actually has turned on.
Keep reviewing what agent tasks did before you accept the results. The reported 6.1 failures were exactly about unreported actions.
