Less oracle, more everyday coworker: what ChatGPT is really for in 2026
Forget the sci-fi pitch. OpenAI's own research, done with Harvard economist David Deming, found that nearly 80 percent of ChatGPT use falls into three plain buckets: practical guidance, looking things up, and writing. In practice that means drafting emails, decoding a contract clause, planning a trip, rescuing a spreadsheet. On top of that, Plus now covers image generation, voice, an agent mode called Work for longer jobs, and Codex for software. If your use is mostly the first three buckets, be honest with yourself about how much horsepower you actually need.
What changed since summer
July 2026: OpenAI launched GPT-5.6. August 2026: the o3 model was retired from ChatGPT.
September 2026 was chaotic. GPT-6 Astra arrived, but Plus gets it only inside Work and Codex. In the normal chat window, GPT-5.6 Sol is still the top option. The same month a multi-hour outage took down ChatGPT and Codex and drew more than 74,000 Downdetector reports. OpenAI also paused new sign-ups for its most expensive Pro tier, citing Astra demand. Plus stayed open. Images 2.5 shipped, and credit-score tracking reached US Plus and Pro users.
Also in September 2026, Comscore reported that ChatGPT's market share is shrinking as Gemini and Claude gain ground. ChatGPT is no longer the default by habit alone.
Shared seat or your own account: pick your risk
Be clear about this first. OpenAI's Terms of Use say you may not share your account credentials or make your account available to anyone else. A shared plan can conflict with those terms. OpenAI's systems can flag logins from many places at once, and the result can be throttling, suspension or a ban. Any of these can wipe out your chat history overnight. Other people on the same account may also be able to see your conversations and memory.
A shared plan suits someone who wants a short, low-stakes trial of Plus features and never types anything private. Pay for your own account if you handle client or work data, depend on memory and saved projects, or can't afford to lose access mid-deadline. Do the same if staying within OpenAI's terms matters to you.
