Dots vs Muse: OpenAI Paywalled Its Answer to Meta
Meta gave Muse a free tier. OpenAI put Dots behind Pro and Business Premium. Who wins the agent fight, and what should ChatGPT users do now?

Short answer
Not yet. Dots is the more ambitious agent on paper, but Meta has a free tier, and Dots is only available on ChatGPT's top paid plans.OpenAI launched Dots at DevDay on September 29, 2026. It's an always-on agent with its own cloud computer and browser, and it can connect to more than 4,000 apps. At launch it is limited to Pro and Business Premium users in eligible markets, and NBC News also reports access for some Enterprise users. NBC News says it is not available in Europe or the UK. Meta's Muse launched in the US on September 8 with a free basic version, according to Reuters. If you're on free ChatGPT or Plus, you can't try Dots today.Source: OpenAI launches Dots, its bubbly agentic avatar (TechCrunch) · 2026-10-13; OpenAI launches Dots AI agents amid safety questions (NBC News) · 2026-10-13; Meta launches AI agent 'Muse' (Reuters via Khaleej Times) · 2026-10-13
What OpenAI actually shipped
TechCrunch reports that Dots runs on GPT-6 Astra and keeps working toward goals you set in the background with little supervision. You start with one "primary dot" that you can name, and OpenAI says it eventually wants teams of Dots working together. Engadget reports that you can message or call a Dot from ChatGPT on desktop, web and mobile, and also reach it through new Slack and Microsoft Teams integrations. TechCrunch adds that text-message support is "coming soon." According to The Elec, Dots can do background research in read-only mode, but sensitive actions need your approval, and you have to change passwords yourself.

Dots is one part of a bigger push. The Elec reports that OpenAI also introduced 'Sign in with ChatGPT', which lets you log in to outside services with your ChatGPT account. Where a partner supports it, Plus and Pro subscribers can use their plan's AI allowances inside that partner's app. The first 16 partners include Notion, Vercel and Cognition's Devin. The Elec describes the strategy as turning ChatGPT into a hub where people and agents find and run software, in other words a super app.

Muse got there first, and it's cheaper to try
Reuters reports that Meta began rolling out Muse in the US on September 8, through its own app and WhatsApp. It can send emails, book travel and connect to email, calendar, payments and shopping apps, and each agent runs on its own cloud virtual machine. Reuters also says a basic version is free, with paid subscriptions for heavier use. NBC News reports that the Muse app reached the top of both the Apple and Android app stores, and it describes Dots as OpenAI's response to that competition.

Our take: Dots is a catch-up move, and OpenAI barely hides it. The playful bubble persona, the cloud computer per agent, the 'tell it the outcome and walk away' pitch: Muse did all of that three weeks earlier. TechCrunch also pointed out the persona overlap. OpenAI's real advantages are the size of its app ecosystem and its reach into the workplace through Slack, Teams and Codex. Those matter to people with jobs to delegate. They don't matter to the millions of people who just tapped a free download at the top of the app store.
Price is the story to watch
There's no standalone Dots price. Engadget reports that the first Dot is free for Pro and Business Premium users, but Codex and Work usage limits still apply. NBC News quotes Sam Altman calling Dots a "premium product". He said heavy compute demands are why it's rolling out in phases, and that OpenAI hopes to bring it to a mass market eventually. OpenAI hasn't said what more Dots will cost or when cheaper plans will get access. The Elec adds that OpenAI hasn't disclosed a revenue-sharing model or pricing structure for developers either.

This is where the matchup turns lopsided. Meta is betting on habit: hook people for free on WhatsApp, then charge the power users. OpenAI is betting on capability: charge first and widen access later. When you're the one catching up, gating your answer behind your most expensive plans is a strange way to win people back. Underrated detail: 'Sign in with ChatGPT' could matter more than Dots, because it turns the Plus subscription you already pay for into a key that works across other apps. Overrated: the 4,000-apps number. Connectors don't help much if most ChatGPT users can't run the agent that uses them.
Who is affected and what to do
Where you stand today
- Free or Plus users: Dots isn't included at launch (TechCrunch, NBC News). Don't upgrade just to try it until OpenAI explains how extra Dots will be priced and what limits apply.
- Pro and Business Premium users: per Engadget, your first Dot is included, but Codex and Work usage limits still apply, so a long-running Dot shares the same allowance.
- Users in the EU or UK: NBC News reports that Dots isn't available there yet.
- Outside the US: Reuters reports that Muse launched only in the US, so neither agent may be available to you.

This clause matters more with an agent that keeps acting while you're away. Under OpenAI's terms, checking what Dots produces is still your job, approval prompts or not. The same archived terms also say you may not share your account credentials or make your account available to anyone else. So splitting a Pro account to get Dots isn't a legitimate workaround. Before you hand over the keys
Whichever agent you pick, start by connecting only the apps it needs for one task, then add more. Reuters reports that Meta's own internal tests turned up a Muse agent exposing someone's iCloud photos. NBC News reports that OpenAI disclosed incidents involving its internal-only agent models. These products are new, so start small with permissions.
