Codex's 28-Day Reset Spree: Gift, or Proof the Limits Are Broken?

OpenAI keeps handing Codex users fresh usage limits. Six of the first 13 days included a reset. Nice perk, but it shows what's wrong with the limits.

Prices last read 2026-10-18

Short answer

It's both. Paying users get a real perk, and OpenAI is admitting that Codex usage limits don't fit how people actually work.On October 4, Codex lead Thibault "Tibo" Sottiaux promised that for 28 days, each day would bring either a clear improvement or a full usage reset. Nerd's Chalk reports that the pledge gave no release schedule, no list of improvements and no confirmed reset for any particular account. An unofficial tracker that logs his posts counts a reset on six of the first 13 days (October 5–17). One of those was a banked reset you save and use later.

What OpenAI actually promised

Nerd's Chalk quotes Sottiaux's October 4 post: "Over the next 28 days, each day we'll either ship one thing that is a clear improvement". If that isn't possible, the team ships a full reset instead. The post has no start or end date for releases. Counted from October 4, the window ends on October 31 or November 1. Resets were already common before the pledge. Nerd's Chalk lists one on October 2–3 after demand spiked in GPT-6.1 Sol's first two days. Another on September 7 was tied to the delayed GPT-6 Astra launch, and one on July 12 followed Codex reaching 6 million active users.

Codex users received fresh usage limits repeatedly during the opening days.

So far the improvements have been real. ByteIota and the tracker both log a roughly 50% default speed increase for GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol on Day 1. The tracker also lists GPT-6.1 Sol's default context going from 272k to 500k on Day 7, smaller desktop-app storage on Day 9, and fewer model-capacity errors with automatic recovery on Day 11. It logs resets on Days 2, 6, 8, 10 and 13, plus a banked reset on Day 3. The tracker is fan-run, says it is not affiliated with OpenAI and uses a bot to classify Sottiaux's posts.

Not every reset is worth the same

OpenAI's support staff have described two kinds of reset on its developer forum. A global or hard reset refreshes the usage window automatically and isn't saved. A banked reset shows up as a reset credit on the Codex usage page, can be used after you hit a limit, and may expire. Staff also wrote that "A global reset starts a fresh weekly usage window from your next Codex use", and that the new date replaces the old one. In August, a Pro subscriber complained that a global reset arriving when only about 20% of the quota was used throws most of its value away. Support replied in September that they would pass the request along, with no timeline.

Our take: generous, and a warning sign

Take the resets. Just don't confuse them with a fix. If a product needs this many global refills to keep its heaviest users happy, its weekly limits are set wrong, either too tight or simply unpredictable. The reset button is the most overrated part of this sprint. It's a sugar rush that tops up people who were nearly empty and does little for anyone who wasn't. The underrated part is the boring work: faster defaults, fewer capacity errors, smarter caching. That work actually stretches the allowance you already have. If OpenAI wants credit, it should keep shipping those, make every reset bankable, and publish limits people can plan around instead of hoping for another lucky Tuesday.

Timing matters too. ByteIota and explainx.ai report that from October 30, Pro 200's Work and Codex allowance drops from 20x to 10x the Plus allowance, and ByteIota notes the sprint doesn't mention the cut. ByteIota also frames the sprint as a response to competition from Claude.

This line from OpenAI's own documentation is the heart of the problem. The page gives estimated message ranges per five hours for Plus and Standard Business, says Pro plans currently have no five-hour limit, warns that weekly limits may also apply, and tells you to check your usage dashboard for current limits and reset times. It lists Work and Codex as included in Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Edu and Enterprise plans. The pledge itself doesn't say which of these plans qualify for its resets.

What to do for the rest of the 28 days

A cautious messy-haired person divides a pitcher among mismatched cups.
Reset value varies, so users should check their limits and pace their work.
  1. Check your usage page, not XOpenAI's docs say to check your usage dashboard for limits and reset times. Banked resets appear there as reset credits.
  2. Use banked resets when you hit a limitSupport staff say banked resets are used after you reach a limit and may expire. Don't let one sit until it expires.
  3. Expect your weekly date to moveA global reset starts a new weekly window from your next Codex use, and that new date replaces the old one.
  4. Don't assume you're eligibleThe pledge names no plans, and staff say eligibility for saved resets can vary by campaign and account type.
  5. Pro 200 users: plan for October 30ByteIota and explainx.ai report the allowance cut takes effect that day, and no reset has been promised to offset it.

Don't plan your week around a reset

Treat any reset as a bonus. Schedule big agent runs around your known weekly date, not around the chance of a refill. If the limits only work because OpenAI keeps topping them up, that's a reason to reconsider your plan, not to keep refreshing a tracker.
