What actually changed on October 1
Advanced Television and C21Media both report that Netflix has signed a licensing deal with Filmin, Spain's independent streamer. Netflix subscribers in Spain get a dedicated section with a curated collection of ten titles, and a new one arrives on the first day of every month. The first collection is called "October Mysteries", a Halloween theme. C21Media says the titles are already on Filmin and that Filmin's editorial team selects them. Later collections will follow the calendar. Both outlets give award-winning films around the Academy Awards as an example.

Both companies are talking it up. In the reports, Netflix's Diego Ávalos, vice president of content for Spain, Portugal and Turkey, says Netflix "deeply admire[s] Filmin's commitment to film and documentaries". Filmin founder and CEO Juan Carlos Tous calls the deal enormous recognition for nearly 20 years of work.

- Netflix in Spain only: look for the Filmin section. These films come at no extra cost on your current plan, and each set disappears about two months after it arrives.
- Netflix outside Spain: the reports describe a Spain-only deal, so don't expect the section to show up for you.
- Paying for both: don't cancel anything yet. Check how many of the films you watch on Filmin show up in the Netflix collections.

This clause is why a Filmin section on Netflix isn't a guarantee. Netflix's own terms say licensed content depends on what third-party providers allow and changes over time. The Filmin titles are licensed, they're set up to rotate out, and Netflix promises nothing about any one film staying.

The take: great for Netflix, a test for Filmin
Let's be clear about who wins here. Netflix gets curation it couldn't build itself: a team of cinephiles picking arthouse films for an algorithm-driven home screen, at the cost of a licence. Netflix subscribers in Spain get a better reason to scroll past the true-crime carousel. That's a good deal, and I'd take it.
For anyone paying for both, it's less comfortable. Filmin's biggest selling point has always been taste: someone with opinions chose these films. Now that taste comes inside Netflix, ten titles at a time. If most of your Filmin watching is the occasional well-known festival film, the Netflix sampler may be enough. I think that's the real risk for Filmin. It isn't losing films. It's losing the casual subscriber who only wanted a good indie recommendation now and then.
Here's what I think is overrated: the idea that a sampler replaces a library. Ten films a month is a playlist. Deep cuts, directors' back catalogues, festival sections and the slow browse that turns up something odd all stay on Filmin. If you're that kind of viewer, this deal is basically free advertising for the service you already use. Filmin now has to make that difference obvious. If it can't, Netflix gets the credit for Filmin's curation.
A simple two-month test
Each collection lasts about two months, so give it one full cycle. Count the films you start on Filmin that aren't in Netflix's section. If that number is close to zero, you're paying Filmin for something you're mostly getting already. If it's high, keep both.
