Netflix Makes You Pay to Wait, and Mid-Tier Shows Pay Too

A 30-show analysis found that gaps over 18 months hurt mid-tier Netflix series, while Squid Game grew. So why pay monthly while you wait?

Short answer

If you only subscribe for one or two returning series, then yes, a long gap between seasons can mean months of paying for something you aren't watching. Netflix lets you cancel whenever you like and restart later, and it keeps your profile for 10 months.Netflix's terms say you can cancel at any time and that the cancellation takes effect at the end of the billing period. It does not refund partial periods. Its help center says your viewing activity, ratings and account details are kept for 10 months after you cancel. You can set 'Remind Me' on an upcoming title so Netflix tells you when it arrives. The rest of this piece is our view on why the waits have got out of hand.

The 18-month finding

On September 28, 2026, What's on Netflix published an analysis by Frédéric Durand of roughly 30 recent Netflix series. It compared IMDb ratings with early viewership from Netflix's own engagement reports, meaning views in the first three to five days of each season. For mid-tier shows with middling reviews, the analysis says a wait of more than 18 months is 'usually fatal' and calls the delay a 'slow poison.' Hits behave differently. Squid Game had a three-year gap between seasons one and two, and the analysis says it still posted the biggest jump in opening-weekend viewership.

A bored person holds a remote, with cobwebs stretching between their arm and body.
Long gaps between seasons can leave subscribers waiting months for the shows they want.

The analysis says quality matters more than the calendar. It uses The Lincoln Lawyer as an example: the second season was received poorly, so season three opened lower even though the wait was about the same. When season three was better received, season four had a big premiere spike. The author sums up wait time as a 'trend multiplier.' A long gap helps a show people love and hurts a show they have already started to forget.

Our take: you shouldn't be paying for Netflix's release strategy

The 'Squid Game came back even bigger' story is the most overrated argument in streaming. Squid Game is the exception. Most of us are not waiting for a global cultural event. We are waiting for a good, solid show we liked, the kind this analysis puts in the mid-tier, and that is the kind a long gap hurts. Netflix seems to plan every returning series as if it were a blockbuster. Subscribers pay for that choice every month while nothing new arrives on the show that got them to sign up.

What annoys us most is the imbalance. If you get bored, Netflix loses one month of your money. If Netflix takes two or more years over a season, you may lose the story itself because you've forgotten who betrayed whom. The data suggests the audience gets bored too, so fast turnarounds for mid-tier shows look like good business as well as better service. Give them tighter production schedules and smaller budgets, and put them out on a steady cycle. Save the big-event treatment for the few shows that actually earn it.

The underrated move is the one Netflix built into its own terms: leave while you wait. If a gap will take your favorite show past the 18-month mark and nothing else on the service holds you, pausing is sensible, not disloyal. Streaming services behave as if you'll never leave. You don't have to go along with that.

This is why timing matters. The same terms say you can cancel at any time and that the cancellation takes effect at the end of the billing period. Months you pay for while waiting for a season are not refunded later. The only way to avoid paying for them is to cancel before the next billing date.

How to wait without paying for the wait

A relieved person unplugs a cord attached to their wallet from a wall socket.
You can cancel your subscription while you wait and restart when your show returns.
  1. Set a reminder firstWhen Netflix shows a future release date for a title, choose Remind Me. On a TV or mobile device, your reminders appear in the 'Reminders You've Set' row in My Netflix. When the title arrives, you may get a notification or an email, and it will be added to My List. If the date changes, Netflix says the title reappears once a new date is set.
  2. Cancel from the membership pageGo to the Manage your membership page (netflix.com/cancelplan), select Cancel, then Finish Cancellation. Netflix says signing out or deleting the app does not cancel your account.
  3. Use the time you've already paid forIf you cancel partway through a billing period, you can keep watching until the period ends. You won't be charged again unless you restart.
  4. Come back within 10 months to keep your profileNetflix keeps your viewing activity, recommendations, ratings and account details for 10 months after you cancel. You can restart at any time from your account page.

Shared household?

Netflix's help center recommends changing your password after you cancel and choosing 'Sign out of all devices', so nobody else in your home can restart the account without your permission.

Before you hit Cancel

  • Is the show you're waiting for the only reason you pay?
  • Have you set Remind Me on the next season, if Netflix lists one?
  • Do you know your next billing date, so you can use the time you've already paid for?
  • Will you be back within 10 months, so your history and recommendations are still there?
