Netflix's AI Gene Wilder: Is 'The Family Said Yes' Enough?
Netflix's Wonka show narrates with an AI Gene Wilder that his estate approved. Critics call it ghoulish. Here's why the estate's OK doesn't settle it.

Short answer
Legally, it may be enough. Ethically, it isn't. Gene Wilder died in 2016 and never agreed to narrate this show.Netflix's reality competition Wonka's The Golden Ticket arrived on September 23, 2026, narrated by an AI copy of Wilder's voice. According to NBC News, ElevenLabs built it from hours of his audiobooks, which his widow supplied, and the estate approved it. That is permission from the people who inherited his legacy. It is not his own consent, and Netflix subscribers are the ones who get to decide whether this becomes normal.Source: NBC News: Netflix's Willy Wonka reality show uses AI Gene Wilder · 2026-09-29; NME: 'Wonka's The Golden Ticket' review · 2026-09-29
What Netflix actually did
NBC News reports that Wonka's The Golden Ticket is a competition with a $3 million prize, and that its narrator is an AI-generated copy of the voice Wilder used in the 1971 film. ElevenLabs produced the voice from audiobooks supplied by Wilder's widow, Karen, and NBC says the estate explicitly approved and encouraged the idea. The showrunners, Emer Harkin and Alison Holloway, defended the choice. Harkin told NBC they 'weren't really ever trying to be the morality police.'

According to LADbible, Karen Wilder backed the project in a June 2026 statement. The show also has at least one fan from the original cast: Rusty Goffe, an Oompa Loompa in the 1971 film, returned for the series and called the recreation 'magical.'

The critics weren't having it
Variety's Alison Herman called the show a 'ghoulish misuse' of AI. She also noted that the estate's permission came 'presumably in exchange for money,' and argued that the machine can copy Wilder's tone but 'can't (yet) intuit comic timing.' In NME, Vicky Jessop described the AI host as sinister, pointing out that the synthetic Wonka mostly exists to enjoy watching contestants get humiliated.

Our take: an estate's signature is not the actor's consent
Let's be clear. Nobody here did anything shady behind the family's back. That's exactly why this case matters: it's the best-case version of a digital resurrection, and it still feels wrong. Estate consent is consent to a licence. Wilder chose his roles and his timing, and knew when to walk away. A licence can't make any of those choices for him. An AI model trained on his audiobooks can only give you what the prompt asks for. It can't turn a line down, and turning lines down is a big part of what made him Wilder.
The 'morality police' line is the most revealing thing in the whole rollout. If you're rebuilding a dead man's voice to host a game show, a bit of moral policing is the least you owe him. Underrated point: Rusty Goffe's enthusiasm is real, and nostalgia is exactly what makes this sellable. Overrated point: 'the family said yes, case closed.' Families can say yes to plenty of things the person themselves might have hated.

Why this matters: as a subscriber, you have no contractual say over what Netflix makes or how it's produced. Its terms say the catalogue changes over time. The influence you do have comes through what you watch, how you rate it, and whether you keep paying.

Who's affected, and what you can do

- Rate it honestlyNetflix lets you rate titles 'Not for me', 'I like this' or 'Love this!'. Those ratings shape your recommendations and the recommendations of members with similar taste, and titles with the most positive ratings get a 'Most Liked' label.
- Know what you're watchingIf you or your kids watch the show, the narrator is a synthetic voice made after Wilder's death, not a performance he recorded for it.
- Vote with your subscriptionIf AI resurrections are a line you won't cross, your plan is the lever you have. You can cancel whenever you like, and there's no need to rage-quit this week.

Our prediction
This is a prediction, not reporting. If Wonka's The Golden Ticket does well, expect more 'estate-approved' voices of dead stars on every streamer. The time to push back is while it's still one show.
