Short answer
Free Gemini users got the change on October 9. AI Plus subscribers are losing the Pro model on a date Google is sending each of them by email. AI Pro and Ultra keep every model. If you're on AI Plus mainly for Pro, you're about to pay for a plan that no longer includes the model you bought it for. Before you switch, check your inbox for Google's cutoff date and decide by your next renewal. If you only ever used the quick everyday model, you don't need to do anything.Source: Changes to Gemini model access and limits – Gemini Apps Help · 2026-10-13; Google AI Plus and free users are losing access to Gemini models – XDA Developers · 2026-10-13
What Google actually changed
On October 3, Android Headlines and XDA Developers both reported that Google is cutting model access on its two cheapest Gemini tiers. Google's own help page, "Changes to Gemini model access and limits," confirms the timing. The changes apply to Gemini Apps on personal accounts. They began for people without an AI subscription on October 9. AI Plus subscribers are supposed to get an email telling them when the change reaches their account. According to XDA, the chart on that page shows AI Plus keeping Flash-Lite and Flash but losing Pro. The same chart shows AI Pro and AI Ultra unchanged.

There's a nuance the "free users only get Flash-Lite" headlines leave out. Google says Auto will be the default for free accounts. Most prompts go to Flash-Lite, but prompts that need deeper reasoning may be routed to Flash or Pro. So free users can't choose the bigger models themselves, but Gemini may still use them. If you turn smart model selection off, a free account uses Flash-Lite for everything. On every tier, you can still pick low, medium or high effort. Higher effort uses up your usage limit faster.

Android Headlines also reports that Google is opening its Deep Think reasoning mode to AI Pro subscribers, after keeping it for Ultra. Google's October help notice doesn't mention Deep Think. When we checked today, Google's subscriptions page still listed Deep Think only under AI Ultra and still showed Pro access in the AI Plus column. Until Google updates its own pages, treat Deep Think for AI Pro as reported, not confirmed.

Who is affected
Find your tier
- No plan (personal account): Auto mode by default since October 9, with Flash-Lite answering most prompts.
- AI Plus: keeps Flash-Lite and Flash. Loses Pro on the date in Google's email.
- AI Pro and AI Ultra: no model changes listed in Google's October notice.
- Work or school accounts: Google's notice only covers personal accounts.

Our take: AI Plus just became a Flash subscription
Let's be blunt. This is a squeeze. Google isn't saying Pro got more expensive to run. It's moving the line so the model people care about only comes with AI Pro and up. AI Plus was the easy pitch: a cheap plan that got you the good model with more room to use it. Without Pro, it's a usage-limit bump on Flash. That can still be worth it if you hit the free cap all the time. It's no longer a reason to pick Gemini over anyone else.
What annoys us most is how it was rolled out. Free users got a fixed date. AI Plus customers, the people actually paying, each get a private date by email, while Google's subscriptions page still shows Pro under AI Plus. If you pay for something, its plan page shouldn't contradict the help page.
The competition matters here. Android Headlines notes that Google still has the cheapest entry-level AI plan around. Anthropic's pricing page lists Sonnet and Haiku on Claude's free plan, while Opus starts with Claude Pro. That means the free tiers of the two rivals are now cut along similar lines: you pay to get the top model.

Is it time to switch? For free users, not yet. Auto can still route hard prompts to stronger models, so try your real tasks for a week before you decide. For AI Plus subscribers who bought it for Pro, yes, at least reconsider. Either move up to AI Pro if you live in Google's apps, or compare entry plans from other providers on what you actually do, not on benchmark charts. The overrated move is canceling in anger. The underrated one is waiting for the email, writing down the date, and deciding before your renewal.
What to do now

- Find Google's emailAI Plus subscribers should get an email explaining when the changes reach their account. XDA reports that a notice also showed up in the Gemini web app.
- Check how much you actually use ProIf most of your chats were quick questions, Flash on AI Plus may be enough. If you relied on Pro for long documents or reasoning, plan for the loss.
- Upgrade, change or cancel before renewalGoogle says you can subscribe, upgrade, change or cancel a Google AI plan at any time. Under Google One's terms, if you cancel you keep access until the end of your current billing period.
- Free users: check the model pickerLeave smart model selection on if you want Gemini to route harder prompts to stronger models. With it off, every reply comes from Flash-Lite.

Why this matters: Google AI plans are sold through Google One. If you decide AI Plus isn't worth it without Pro, canceling doesn't cut you off right away. You keep the plan until the end of the billing period you've already paid for. The terms list exceptions, such as immediate cancellation or withdrawal rights, so check them for your region.
