Gemini Isn't a Worse Chatbot. It's a Worse Assistant.
Google Assistant is gone from Android phones, watches and Android Auto. Here's where Gemini still falls short, and why paying more won't fix it.

Short answer
For the boring, reliable stuff, yes: Gemini is still the worse assistant. You also can't switch back any more.9to5Google reported on September 28 that Android phones, tablets, Wear OS watches, headphones and Android Auto no longer run Google Assistant, and the 'Switch to Google Assistant' setting is gone. Google's own help page still lists Assistant features Gemini doesn't support, including podcast, news and radio providers, Interpreter mode, and some routine starters and actions. Nest speakers and displays still run Assistant.Source: Gemini fully replaces Google Assistant on Android (9to5Google) · 2026-10-06; Gemini Apps Help: Google Assistant features in your Gemini mobile app · 2026-10-06
What actually happened, and who it hits
Google first said in March 2025 that classic Assistant would stop being available on most mobile devices. According to Droid-Life, the final shutdown was announced in August, rolled out from early September, and the switch-back option disappeared with Google app version 17.62.9 on September 28. The change covers paired devices as well: Wear OS watches, headphones or earbuds that use Gemini, and Android Auto. Android Police checked a Galaxy Z Fold 8 and a Pixel 10 Pro and found the option gone on both.

Not everything changed. 9to5Google and Android Headlines both report that Nest speakers, Google Home displays and other Assistant smart home devices keep working as before. Android Headlines and Android Police say the Assistant app still works on iPhone, though Android Police expects that to end eventually. Google's 2025 announcement also said phones that don't meet Gemini's minimum requirements would keep Assistant for the time being.

Where Gemini still loses
Android Police puts it plainly: Gemini lacks some of Assistant's skills and its ability to talk to other devices, and on smart home control Assistant still wins. Android Headlines describes users missing offline voice commands for quick settings and smart home routines. One 9to5Google commenter said Gemini can't handle a simple navigation request in Android Auto that Assistant 'worked flawlessly' on. That's one reader's report, not a test, but it matches what the other outlets are describing.

If a feature you rely on isn't supported in your Gemini mobile app, you can switch to Google Assistant.

This matters because it was Google's official fallback for the gaps it lists on the same page. When we read the page on October 6, it still offered that advice. 9to5Google and Droid-Life report that the switch no longer exists on Android phones and paired devices. So the gaps are still documented, but the fallback is gone.

Our take: Google retired the tool before replacing it
Gemini is the better chatbot. Nobody serious disputes that. But nobody bought a phone to chat with it at a red light. Assistant was a light switch: dull, instant and nearly always right. Gemini is a clever intern who sometimes overthinks 'lights off'. Retiring the switch while your own help page still points people to it isn't a confident upgrade. It's a deadline that came before the product was ready. The underrated loser is Android Auto: a voice assistant that hesitates in the car is worse than an annoying one at your desk.
Don't expect a subscription to fix this. Google's plans page sells paid Gemini tiers on higher usage limits, video generation credits and more storage. None of that brings back podcast providers, Interpreter mode or offline reliability. If anyone suggests paying to get your old assistant back, they're overselling. Pay for Gemini because you want the AI, not to buy back what Assistant used to do for free.

What to do this week
- Read Google's help list of unsupported Assistant features and compare it with the voice commands you use every day.
- Try your morning routine through Gemini now. Google says some routine starters and actions aren't supported, so find the gaps before you rely on it.
- For podcasts, news and radio, open the provider's app directly. Google lists these media providers as unsupported in Gemini.
- Your Nest speakers and displays still run Assistant, so for now they're the most reliable way to control your home by voice.
- If something you depended on broke, report it through Gemini's feedback option. The help page shows Google is still filling these gaps.

Still have an older or low-memory phone?
Google said in 2025 that devices that don't meet Gemini's minimum system requirements would keep Assistant for the time being. Gemini's own page says it needs at least 2 GB of RAM.
