The 'Switch to Google Assistant' option is gone from Android. Here's who is affected, what still keeps Assistant, and whether Gemini can handle timers.

Short answer
Yes, it's done. On Android phones and tablets, and on paired devices, Google Assistant has been replaced by Gemini, and the option to switch back is gone.9to5Google reported on September 28, 2026 that the Gemini app no longer offers 'Switch to Google Assistant'. The change covers phones, tablets, Wear OS, headphones and Android Auto. Google Nest speakers, Home displays and other smart-home devices keep Assistant for now. Is Gemini ready? It's mostly ready for questions. For the boring, must-work jobs, users are still reporting gaps.Source: Gemini fully replaces Google Assistant on Android (9to5Google) · 2026-10-04
What changed
According to 9to5Google, the 'Switch to Google Assistant' setting disappeared with Google app version 17.60 (stable) and 17.62 (beta). Long-pressing the power button or swiping in from a corner now opens Gemini. Android Headlines puts the official shutdown phase at September 4, 2026, after Google pushed its original 2025 target into 2026. A dpa report syndicated on Yahoo Tech says users in the US and Europe are seeing Assistant disappear in waves, with no single global cut-off date.

None of this came out of nowhere. In March 2025, Google's Brian Marquardt wrote that Google was moving mobile users from Assistant to Gemini, and that tablets, cars, headphones and watches would follow. The same post said devices that can't meet Gemini's requirements would keep Google Assistant. If you have a very old or low-spec phone, check whether yours is one of them.

Who's affected, and what users say is broken
If you use Android on a phone, tablet, Wear OS watch, Assistant-enabled headphones or Android Auto, you're affected. Nest and Home speakers and displays are not, for now. dpa reports user complaints about Google Keep, routines, navigation and hands-free controls. Android Headlines says offline voice commands for quick phone settings, along with smart-home routines, are among the things users miss. One commenter on 9to5Google said Gemini couldn't handle a contact-based navigation request in Android Auto that used to work with Assistant. That's a single user's report, not a measured failure rate, but it's exactly the kind of task people do while driving.

Take care when using these features since Gemini can make mistakes.

Why this line matters: Google's own help page says Gemini's task features can make mistakes and need supervision. That warning is about the same assistant that now handles your power-button press, and you can't turn it off.

The take: users shouldn't be the beta testers
I don't mind Gemini being the default. I mind it being the only choice. Assistant was never smart, but it was predictable: set a timer, turn off the lights, call Mum. Swapping that for a chatbot that Google itself says can make mistakes is a fine trade for curious people. It's a bad one for someone holding a steering wheel or a pan. A kill switch costs Google almost nothing. Taking it away tells you Google cares more about Gemini adoption numbers than about your 7 a.m. alarm.
Overrated: the idea that an 'AI agent' is automatically an upgrade for every voice command. Underrated: the dull reliability of the old assistant, which only gets noticed once it's gone. And note the awkward split. Your Nest speaker still runs Assistant while your phone runs Gemini, so one household now has two Google assistants that behave differently. That's not a strategy. It's a migration still in progress.
What to do this week

- Test your must-work commands nowGo through the voice tasks you depend on, like alarms, timers, calls, navigation and smart-home controls. Do it at home, not the first time you need them in the car.
- Check your routinesUsers report routines among the broken features. If something you automated stopped working, rebuild it or set up a manual fallback before you need it.
- Don't hunt for the old toggleThe switch is gone in recent Google app versions. Guides that show the 'Switch to Google Assistant' menu describe how things used to work.
- Report failures through feedbackIf Gemini fails at a basic task, send feedback. The only lever users have left is making the gaps visible to Google.
Work or school account?
Google's help page says that with a work or school account, some Gemini mobile app features aren't available, including Assistant-powered quick voice actions. Check with your admin before you assume these will work.
