Short answer
For casual creators, probably not yet. Try Google's free tier first, and pay only once you keep running out of generations. On September 23, 2026, Google said anyone with a Google or Google Workspace account can generate videos in Google Vids at no cost using Gemini Omni 1.1 Flash. Output is full 1080p HD, and you get scene extension, exact duration control and upscaling. Google does not publish a number for the free limit. It points personal users to its Google AI plans for more access, and Decrypt describes the free tier as a standard allowance, with larger generation pools on paid tiers.Source: Google Blog: Gemini Omni in Google Vids · 2026-09-29; Decrypt: Google Just Made Free 1080p AI Video Generation Available to Anyone · 2026-09-29
What actually changed on September 23
Google's Vids product manager Justin Luk announced that free Google accounts can now generate brand-new AI scenes in 1080p or upscale existing AI clips. You can also extend a scene while keeping its lighting, characters and setting consistent, and set the exact length of each clip so it lines up with your voiceover. The entry point is vids.new. Every clip made with Omni 1.1 in Vids carries an invisible SynthID watermark embedded in the video frames. Android Authority notes that Google did not say whether free users face any limits.

Omni used to be a paid feature. At I/O on May 19, 2026, Google listed Gemini Omni as a feature for AI Plus, Pro and Ultra subscribers globally, available in the Gemini app and Flow. When Omni came to Google Vids in July, Google said it was for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers and Google Workspace business customers. So on September 23 the paywall came off Vids specifically.

Who this affects
Where you stand
- Free Google account: you can now make 1080p Omni clips in Vids, within an allowance Google hasn't specified.
- Google AI Plus, Pro or Ultra subscriber: you keep bigger generation allowances, according to Decrypt.
- Workspace Business or Enterprise: Google says these plans include expanded generation pools and central admin controls.
- Anyone who publishes the clips: they are watermarked with SynthID, and Decrypt says Google's SynthID Detector can check for it.

Our take: the free tier is the new baseline
Here's the uncomfortable truth for paid AI video apps: most people who pay for Kling or turn on CapCut's AI extras want a few good-looking clips for a Reel, a class project or a product demo. A free 1080p generator from Google, with scene extension and exact timing, covers much of that. If a standalone video subscription's main selling point was 'HD clips that look decent,' that point just got a lot weaker. Decrypt even names Kling among the rivals now feeling the pressure.
Is it overrated? A little. 'Free' with no published limit is a trial with better marketing. Google hasn't said how many clips you get, so you can't plan a real workflow around it yet. And Vids is a presentation-style editor built for Workspace, not a creator's playground. Heavy creators who need lots of generations, fine control or a specific look will still end up paying someone. That could be Google, or it could be a specialist tool.
What's underrated is the watermark. SynthID is invisible, so it won't wreck your frame, but it does mean your clip can be identified as AI-made. We think that's a good thing. If you were hoping to pass these clips off as real footage, this is the wrong tool, and Google's own rules say so.
Misrepresenting the provenance of generated content by claiming it was created solely by a human, in order to deceive
Google Generative AI Prohibited Use Policy (last modified December 17, 2024)Source: Google Generative AI Prohibited Use Policy · 2026-09-29
Why this matters here: the policy lists that as a prohibited use of Google's generative AI. Free access doesn't change that. If you post Omni clips, don't present them as human-made footage in order to deceive viewers.

What to do before you renew anything

- Test the free tier on a real projectOpen vids.new with your Google account and build one video you actually need. That will show you more than any demo reel.
- Watch for when you hit the limitGoogle hasn't published the free allowance, so pay attention to when generation stops. If you never hit the limit, you don't need a paid plan for this.
- Upgrade only for capacityGoogle says personal users can get more AI video access in Vids through Google AI plans, and teams can get expanded pools through Workspace Business and Enterprise.

Our rule of thumb
If you're paying for a standalone AI video app and make fewer than a handful of clips a month, spend two weeks with free Vids before your next renewal. Cancel the other app only if Vids does the job.
