Gemini's New Map Tool Is Great. Desktop Users Can't Have It
Gemini can now circle part of a live map and answer questions about that spot, but only in the phone app. Here's what it does and who is left out.

Short answer
You can't use it on the web because Google hasn't put it there. The Map tool is only in the Gemini apps for Android and iPhone.9to5Google reported on October 2, 2026 that Gemini has a new Map tool that is widely rolled out on mobile, and said it is not available on the web. Android Police, writing on October 11, says the tool is only in the Android and iPhone apps, not on the web or desktop. None of the coverage gives a date for a web version.Source: Gemini app gains new 'Map' tool, replacing '/' with '@' (9to5Google, Oct 2, 2026) · 2026-10-12; This Gemini Map feature solved my biggest search frustration in seconds (Android Police, Oct 11, 2026) · 2026-10-12
What the Map tool actually does
According to 9to5Google, Map is the last item in the Gemini prompt carousel, after Photos, Camera, Avatar, Files, Drive and Notebooks. Tapping it opens a live map of where you are, with a circle marking the focus area. You can pan and zoom the map, or use the magnifying glass in the top-right corner to search for somewhere else. When you tap "Explore this area", a "Map Area" chip appears in the prompt box, and you type your question after it.

- Open the attachment menuIn the Gemini app on your phone, tap the plus (+) button and scroll right to Map.
- Place the circleDrag, pinch or search until the circle covers the area you want to ask about.
- Attach the areaTap "Explore this area". A Map Area chip is added to your prompt.
- Ask your questionType something like a request for coffee shops or things to do. Android Police says results appear as cards with photos, ratings, prices and opening hours, plus a map preview you can export to Google Maps as a list.

This took months, and the web still didn't get it
The tool isn't a surprise. Absolute Geeks writes that evidence of it first surfaced in app code back in February, and Android Authority published an APK teardown about a Gemini "map area" attachment. Even so, the October launch is mobile-only. Absolute Geeks puts it plainly: "The web version doesn't have it."

Our take: the phone-first launch is understandable. A circle on a map is a touch gesture, and most "what's good near here?" questions get asked on the street. That explains why phones went first. It doesn't explain why desktop has nothing. The people who plan a trip on a laptop the night before are exactly the people who would draw a circle around a neighborhood they've never visited. Google built a planning tool and then kept it off the device where most planning happens.
Is it any good? Mostly, in busy areas
Android Police's hands-on review is the most useful reality check so far. In a well-mapped Brooklyn neighborhood, results stayed inside the circle and walking times were roughly right. In a less-mapped area, Gemini said the options were limited and suggested a café outside the circle. It also padded a short coffee list with a pizza place and a shawarma spot, and a gym search returned a laundry. In long chats it lost track of the circle until the writer started a new chat and attached the Map Area again.

Our view: this is underrated as a step toward Gemini being a real local guide, and overrated if people treat it as a replacement for Google Maps. Typing "near Park Slope" was always vague. A circle you draw yourself isn't. That precision is the actual upgrade. The padding with off-topic places is the familiar chatbot habit of filling a list rather than admitting it's short, so check anything you plan to walk to.
Who is affected, and what to do
Where you stand
- Gemini on an Android phone or iPhone: update the app and look for Map at the end of the + carousel. 9to5Google calls it widely rolled out.
- Gemini on the web or desktop: there's no Map tool, and none of the reports we read give a date for one.
- Paying subscribers on desktop: none of the coverage mentions plan requirements, so a paid plan doesn't add the tool on the web either.

Desktop workaround (not the same thing)
On the web, name the area as precisely as you can in your prompt, such as the street, the cross-streets or a landmark, and say how far you're willing to walk. You lose the drawn circle, so check the results against Google Maps. If you plan on a laptop, you could also build the list on your phone with Map and export it to Google Maps, which Android Police says the tool supports.
The privacy fine print
Location data is always collected if you use Gemini Apps

Here's why that matters for the Map tool. Google's privacy hub says Gemini uses your general area from your IP address by default and uses precise device location only with your permission. It says that precise location isn't stored in Gemini Apps Activity and that other location data is coarsened to a general area before it's saved. The Map tool opens on your current location, so it's worth checking Gemini's location permission on your phone. You can also review or delete your Gemini Apps activity.
