Gemini Gems Aren't Going Paid. The Real Catch Is Your Privacy

Gems become skills on Nov 17. The paywall panic is wrong on Google's own help page, but you need Keep Activity on and must be 18+.

Short answer

Probably not. Google's own help page now says skills don't require a paid plan. The catches are an age limit and a privacy setting.9to5Google reports that Gems will start turning into skills on November 17, 2026, and Google says it will convert your Gems automatically. Early reports said only Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers could create skills, through the Gemini Spark tab. Google's English help page for skills now says they are available without a Google AI subscription and are rolling out gradually to Gemini chats on personal accounts. To use them, you must be 18 or older and have Keep Activity turned on.

Why everyone thought Google was paywalling Gems

The panic made sense at first. On September 9, Android Authority dug through the Gemini app's code and found a deprecation notice. It said Gems would become skills on November 17, and that you couldn't create or edit Gems from October 13. The same report pointed out that skills and Spark were then limited to Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers, while Gems were open to every Gemini user. On September 27, 9to5Google confirmed the November 17 switch and automatic migration. It also noted that creating skills still went through the Spark tab, which was limited to Pro and Ultra. Google's Spark changelog shows Spark rolling out to Pro subscribers in the US in July. Google's Spark requirements page says US users need Pro or Ultra and people in other countries need Ultra.

This is the sentence that matters for free users. It's on Google's current English help page for skills, which says skills are coming to regular Gemini chats in stages, starting with personal Google Accounts. That means they may not show up for you yet. The paid tiers are still needed for Spark tasks and schedules. They're no longer described as the price of entry for skills.

Our take: the paywall theory is overrated

We expected to write a takedown of a migration that was really a paywall in disguise. Google's own wording makes that hard to argue now. The bigger problem is how badly Google communicated this. For weeks, the only public explanation was an APK teardown and a Spark tab that free users couldn't open. If Google had led with the 'no subscription needed' line, this panic wouldn't have happened.

Using skills requires being 18 or older and keeping the Keep Activity setting turned on.

Skills really are better than Gems

According to Google's help pages, you call a skill by typing '/' in any Gemini chat, and Google says this will change to '@' soon. You can combine several skills in one chat, and Gemini can also apply a relevant skill on its own. Google says it will move your Gems over automatically when Gems go away, along with any supported files.

Gems were always a dead end. Each one lived in its own side-panel conversation, so using two at once meant copying and pasting between chats. Being able to stack a 'house style' skill on top of a 'meeting notes' skill in one thread is a real upgrade. This is the rare Google rename that improves the product.

The real catch: Keep Activity and the 18+ rule

Google's requirements for creating and using skills are: you're 18 or older, you're signed in with a personal Google Account (work and school accounts aren't supported yet), and Keep Activity is turned on. Google's help pages don't say what happens to a Gem whose owner doesn't meet those requirements. The timing is also different for some accounts. Google says Gems end in November 2026 for personal accounts, March 2027 for Workspace business, enterprise and non-profit accounts, and June 2027 for Workspace education accounts.

This annoys us more than any price tag would. Many privacy-conscious people turned Keep Activity off on purpose, and now they're being told to turn it back on to keep a feature they already had. Google should answer two questions plainly. Does a Gem migrate if Keep Activity is off? And what happens to under-18 users' Gems? Until Google answers, 'automatic migration' hasn't been promised to everyone.

What to do before November 17

  • Edit or copy your Gem instructions now. Android Authority found an in-app notice saying you can't create or edit Gems from October 13.
  • Save any long Gem instructions in a document you control, so you have a copy even if the migration misses something.
  • Check your Keep Activity setting. Google lists it as a requirement for skills.
  • Type '/' in a Gemini chat to see whether skills have reached your account. Google says the rollout is gradual.
  • If you use Gems on a work or school account, Google gives you until March or June 2027.

Our verdict: free users aren't losing their custom AIs, according to Google's own documentation. You don't need to buy Pro just to keep a Gem. Pay only if you want Spark's scheduled tasks and app connections, which are a different product from skills.
