Gemini's Squeeze: AI Pro Is Now the Only Tier That Makes Sense
Google moved Gemini Pro out of the free and AI Plus tiers and reportedly added Deep Think to AI Pro. Here's whether AI Pro is now the only plan worth paying for.

Short answer
If you want Gemini's Pro model in the app, AI Pro is now the cheapest plan that includes it.Google's help page says the free tier now defaults to Auto, which sends most prompts to Flash-Lite. Google's plans page lists only the Flash model for AI Plus. AI Pro keeps Flash-Lite, Flash and Pro, and 9to5Google reports that it also gains Deep Think, which until now was limited to the top plans. What Google actually changed
According to Google's help page, model availability for personal accounts changes starting in October 2026, and users with no AI plan are affected first, from October 9. Auto becomes the default for them and sends most prompts to Flash-Lite. If you turn smart model selection off, every response uses Flash-Lite. 9to5Google's October 3 report says Flash and Pro are no longer available to free users. AI Plus keeps Flash-Lite and Flash but loses Pro, and the help page says Plus subscribers will get an email telling them when the change applies to their account. AI Pro and AI Ultra keep all three models.

The Deep Think sweetener, and the catch
9to5Google reports that AI Pro customers will get Deep Think, which it says was previously limited to the $99.99 and $199.99 monthly plans, and The Mac Observer repeats the claim. Google's own pages, as we read them today, don't confirm it. The help page lists 'Extended thinking and Deep Think' only as premium features that use more of your limit, and the plans page doesn't mention Deep Think at all. The same help page adds low, medium and high effort levels for each available model, and higher effort uses more of your limit. Limits refresh every five hours until you reach a weekly cap. Google describes AI Pro's limits as 4x the standard ones and AI Plus's as 2x.

Our take: this is a funnel
Let's not pretend this is about 'smart model selection.' Google cut the free tier back to the smallest model, took the one reason to pay for AI Plus, and dangled Deep Think one step higher. That's a squeeze, and it's a well-designed one. AI Pro now looks like a bargain mostly because everything below it got worse. That's the annoying part. You aren't being offered more. You're being charged to keep what you had.
Overrated: AI Plus. A paid plan that offers the same Flash model the free tier used to have, plus higher limits, is a hard sell for anyone who writes, codes or researches. Underrated: the effort slider. If you're on AI Pro, keeping routine chats on low effort is how you avoid hitting the weekly wall halfway through a project. Treat 'high' like a credit card, not a default.
The fight that really matters isn't Plus vs Pro. It's AI Pro vs whatever you'd otherwise pay a rival chatbot. Google's plans page lists Gemini 4 Argon access under AI Pro. If that holds alongside Deep Think, AI Pro is the strongest mid-priced AI subscription Google has had. If Deep Think arrives with tiny limits, it's a demo dressed up as a perk.
Who should do what
- Free user who only drafts emails or asks quick questions: stay free and see whether Flash-Lite is enough.
- AI Plus subscriber who relied on Pro: watch for Google's email, then compare upgrading to AI Pro with cancelling.
- AI Plus subscriber who only ever used Flash: Plus still gives you Flash and higher limits, so decide whether that's worth paying for.
- AI Pro subscriber: try the effort levels and keep high effort for hard problems, because it uses more of your limit.

Don't assume Deep Think yet
Deep Think on AI Pro comes from press reports, and Google's pages haven't confirmed it as of our reading. If it's your main reason to upgrade, check that it appears in your own Gemini app before you pay.
