Short answer

Yes, Google is turning Gemini into a place where you can buy things. In India it is testing a 'Buy' button that sends you to a Flipkart-branded checkout without leaving Gemini or AI Mode.TechCrunch reported on 26 September 2026 that the test covers smartphones, electronics and mobile accessories, is limited to some users and some products, and is due to roll out more widely later in October, ahead of India's festive shopping season. Amazon listings still show up in the same results, but they don't get a Buy button. Google owns a minority stake in Flipkart, which Walmart owns.

What TechCrunch actually reported

According to TechCrunch's Jagmeet Singh, some Flipkart product listings in Gemini and AI Mode in India now show a Buy button. Tapping it opens a checkout with Flipkart's branding. TechCrunch notes that this is not the same as the Google-hosted checkout Google has shown off before, and says it's unclear what technology powers the test. Google didn't confirm any details. A spokesperson said only that Google is "always testing new features and experiences to help people discover and connect with businesses more easily."

Some background matters here. TechCrunch reports that Google put about $350 million into Flipkart in 2024 and got a minority stake in return. Google also introduced its Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) in January 2026. In its own words, UCP is an open standard for agentic commerce covering "discovery and buying to post-purchase support." When it launched, checkout in AI Mode and Gemini was for eligible U.S. retailers, and those retailers stayed the seller of record. In May, Google added Universal Cart, a single cart that works across retailers and across Search and Gemini.

A person holds a signpost with many arrows while a tiny shopkeeper bends every arrow toward one small shop.
The button itself is not the issue. The concern is that only one store gets it, and Google owns part of that store.

Who's affected right now

For now, only a limited group of users in India who shop for phones, electronics and mobile accessories. TechCrunch didn't say whether you need a paid Gemini plan, and Google hasn't published eligibility rules for this test. If you don't see the button, nothing is wrong with your account. You just aren't in the test.

The take: the button isn't the problem. Only one store having it is.

Checkout inside a chatbot isn't sinister. Google has been building it in the open for nine months, and if it saves you from juggling five tabs during a festive sale, that's real convenience. What bothers me is that only one retailer gets the shortcut. Amazon shows up in the same answer with no button. Flipkart, a company Google part-owns, gets the one-tap path. Gemini can describe both stores evenly and still put its thumb on the scale, because whichever option is easiest to buy is the one you'll probably buy. When an assistant's answer ends in a checkout, the convenience itself is a recommendation.

Overrated: the fear that Gemini will start inventing product reviews to sell you phones. Underrated: the dull ways it can steer you without lying, such as which store gets a button, which offer shows up when you're 'ready to buy', and which cart remembers you. Google is already piloting Direct Offers in AI Mode, which it describes as "exclusive offers for shoppers who are ready to buy." That isn't a scandal, but it is a business model. And it should matter to people paying for Gemini in London or Los Angeles too, because a subscription doesn't buy you an assistant with no commercial interests.

When you add products to your Google shopping cart from Gemini, cart and order data is saved to your Google Wallet.

Why this matters: the same Google page says "Your Gemini Apps chats are not being used to show you ads." That promise covers your chats, not your shopping. Cart and order data goes to Google Wallet, and Google says it handles that data under its own terms and privacy policy, which can include personalization and ads depending on your settings. When Gemini sends you to an outside service, that service processes your data "according to their own privacy policies." On a Flipkart-branded checkout, Flipkart's policies apply too.

Before you tap Buy in Gemini

  • Check whose checkout you're in. The test uses a Flipkart-branded flow, so returns, warranty and delivery are handled by Flipkart, not Gemini.
  • Compare at least one other retailer. Amazon listings can appear in the same answer without a Buy button, so look them up yourself.
  • Look at your Google account's personalization and ad settings. Cart and order data saved to Google Wallet falls under Google's terms, not the 'chats aren't used for ads' promise.
  • Treat 'best phone under X' answers as a starting shortlist, not a final verdict, especially when one result has a one-tap button.
  • Don't assume a paid Gemini plan unlocks or removes this. Google hasn't said either way.

Our verdict

Use Gemini to research. Be wary of letting it close the sale. Until Google gives every major retailer the same Buy path, or clearly labels why one store got it, treat that button as a placement, not as advice.
