Gemini Now Waits on Hold for You. It's Still a Pixel Ad

Gemini's new Call for Me feature sits through phone menus and hold music for you. It's the best AI perk in a while, if you own the right phone.

Short answer

Only if you already own a Pixel 11 in the US and don't mind using beta software. On September 24, 2026, Google started testing Call for Me. Gemini calls a business from your own number, gets through the phone menu, waits on hold and handles tasks like rescheduling an appointment or booking a table. While it does this you can read a live transcript and take over at any time. According to Google's help page, you need all of the following: you are 18 or older and in the US, you use a Pixel 11 with a US SIM, you pay for a Google AI subscription, you run the Public Beta of the Phone by Google app and the latest Gemini app, and your phone is set to English. Everyone else gets nothing for now.

What Google actually launched

TechCrunch reports that Call for Me can check whether a store has something in stock, make restaurant reservations, reschedule appointments and ask a store to hold an item. The call goes out from your own number on your own phone, and Gemini asks for your approval before it shares personal information. It builds on Google's earlier calling tools: Ask for Me from 2025, Hold for Me and Direct My Call. Google told TechCrunch it is starting small because real conversations are messy. 9to5Google says four phones qualify: the Pixel 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro XL and 11 Pro Fold.

A hand-drawn person working through the guide's check

There are guardrails. Google's help page says Gemini won't call emergency services, won't complete payments or share card details, won't pass on sensitive data such as Social Security numbers, passwords or health information, and won't make telemarketing calls. There is also a daily limit on how many calls it will make for you. The rollout is gradual, so meeting every requirement still doesn't guarantee you have the feature yet.

Gemini starts every call by disclosing that it's an AI assistant from Google calling on a recorded line on your behalf, stating your name.

This matters because the business will know it's talking to an AI, will hear your name, and will be told the call is recorded. According to the help page, the full transcript and recording end up in your Phone app call history. If you wouldn't want a call recorded, don't hand it to Gemini.

Our take: the best AI perk this year, stuck on one phone

Let's be honest about what people hate. It isn't writing emails. It's 40 minutes of hold music and a phone menu that sends you back to the start of the menu. An assistant that sits through that for you is the first AI subscription feature in a long while that saves real time, not just words. Chatbots competing over who writes the better sonnet should pay attention: this is what 'agentic' should have meant from the start.

The catch is that Google has put its most convincing reason to pay for Gemini behind a specific phone, a beta app and a US SIM. Right now it's a reason to buy a Pixel 11, not a reason to subscribe to Gemini. If you're on a Galaxy or an iPhone, paying for Gemini today because of this feature means paying for something you can't use yet. Our advice: don't upgrade for Call for Me until Google makes it work beyond Pixel. If you already have a Pixel 11 and a Google AI plan, turn it on today and test it on low-stakes calls like a store's stock check before you trust it with the dentist.

Before you hand Gemini your phone line

  • You're 18+, in the US, on a Pixel 11 with a US SIM
  • You already pay for a Google AI subscription
  • You've joined the Phone by Google Public Beta
  • You're comfortable with the call being recorded and your name being given
  • The task doesn't involve payment, card details or sensitive personal data
