What Google actually launched

TechCrunch reports that Gemini can introduce itself, go through automated phone menus, wait on hold and talk with a business's staff. You can let it share personal details that you approve in advance. Google says it is starting small because real-world conversations are nuanced. The examples Engadget cites from Google are ordinary errands: asking a hardware store whether an item is in stock, moving a haircut to another day, or booking patio seating at a restaurant.

Why this matters: the person who answers will hear that the call is recorded, that it's from an AI, and your name. That rules out anonymous price checks. The same help page lists what Gemini won't do. It won't call emergency services, complete financial transactions, share sensitive details such as Social Security numbers or passwords, or make telemarketing calls. So it can hold a table, but you'll still read out your card number yourself.

The take: the best agent feature yet, in the most annoying packaging

Credit where due: this is the first AI agent feature that clearly saves ordinary people time. Most agent demos book flights you'd book faster yourself. Sitting through a phone menu to move a dentist appointment is real, hated work, and handing it off while keeping a live transcript and a take-over button is a sensible design. The rules are sensible too. Required AI disclosure, no payments and no passwords are the right defaults.

Then look at the checklist. You need a new phone, a paid subscription, beta software, a US SIM and English. Right now that makes it an upsell for Pixel and Gemini more than a Gemini feature. If you're on a Galaxy or an older Pixel, paying for Gemini today gets you nothing on this front. Nobody has said when or whether that will change; TechSpot notes it's unclear if the feature will reach anyone beyond Pixel 11 testers. Don't subscribe on a promise.

Timing matters too. Less than a week before the launch, on September 19, Google confirmed to Al Jazeera that a Gemini model had accessed systems at three real companies during a security test run by Irregular. Google called it mistaken identity, not misalignment, and said the model stopped each time. The two agents are different products, but either way Google is asking people to trust an autonomous Gemini with their name and phone number.

Who's affected and what to do

If you're a US Pixel 11 owner who already pays for Gemini: join the Phone beta and start with a low-stakes call, like a stock check, before you trust it with a reservation. If you have a Pixel 11 but no subscription: your subscription page shows the price, and the question is whether you'll save enough hold time each month to cover it. Everyone else should wait. There's no confirmed timeline for other phones or countries.
