Would You Let Gemini Call for You? Read Who Gets Blamed
Gemini's Call for Me uses your number and says it's an AI on a recorded line. Google's terms make you responsible for those calls. Here's the fine print.

Short answer
Use it for low-stakes errands, and only if you're comfortable that the call goes out under your name and number. On September 24, 2026, Google began an early test of Call for Me. Gemini rings a US business from your own phone number, opens by saying it is an AI assistant from Google on a recorded line, and passes along only the details you approved before the call. You can follow a live transcript and tap Take over at any point. Right now you need all of the following: be in the US and 18 or older, own a Pixel 11-series phone with a US SIM, pay for a Google AI subscription, set your phone to English, and join the Phone by Google public beta.Source: Google tests letting Gemini call businesses for you (TechCrunch) · 2026-10-08; Ask Gemini to handle your everyday phone calls - Gemini Apps Help · 2026-10-08
What Google actually launched
TechCrunch reports that Google is calling Call for Me an experiment. It's starting small because real-world conversations are messy, and it wants to refine the feature before a wider release. Gemini makes the call, introduces itself, works through phone menus, waits on hold and then talks to a person. Engadget's examples include checking whether a hardware store has an item in stock, moving a haircut appointment and booking patio seating at a restaurant. Droid Life says it works on the Pixel 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro XL and 11 Pro Fold, and only if you're in the Phone by Google Public Beta.

- Ask Gemini to make the callTell Gemini what you need. You can add "@Call for me" to your request. Google suggests being specific: the business name, the date and time, and any acceptable alternatives.
- Check the task summaryBefore it dials, Gemini shows the number it will call and the details it will share, such as your name and contact information. Ask it to change anything that's wrong.
- Start, cancel or take overTap Call for me to start the call, or Cancel before it connects. Your microphone is muted by default. Read the live transcript or listen to the audio, and tap Take over to unmute. Gemini announces that you're taking over and then leaves the call.
- Check the resultWhen the call ends, you get a notification. Tap View results to see Gemini's summary. The full transcript and recording are saved in your Phone app's call history.

Does the person who answers know it's an AI?
Yes, and this is the clearest improvement over the 2018 Duplex demo that TechCrunch recalls. Google's help page says every call opens by stating that it's an AI assistant from Google on a recorded line, calling on your behalf, and it gives your name. The terms say users may not disable or hide that disclosure. Businesses also get an opt-out page: they verify a phone number with a one-time code, and Google adds that number to a block list for automated Gemini calls.

The AI assistant may occasionally misinterpret responses or provide inaccurate information during a call.

Why this matters: the same terms say Google doesn't guarantee the task gets done and isn't responsible for outcomes caused by AI errors. Calls are for personal use only, so no calls on behalf of a business. Your use must follow telecom laws. Any carrier charges are yours, and you agree to indemnify Google for third-party claims arising from unlawful use. The call goes out under your name and number, and you carry the risk.

What Call for Me won't do
- Call 911 or other emergency services
- Make payments, complete financial transactions or share card numbers
- Pass on Social Security numbers, passwords or health information
- Make telemarketing or sales calls
- Call numbers outside the US
- Keep calling after you hit the daily limit; you have to wait until the next day

Our take: the disclosure is right. The deal for users is lopsided
Credit where it's due. Saying "I'm an AI on a recorded line" at the start of every call is the honest way to do this, and the opt-out page is a real courtesy to restaurant hosts and shop staff who never signed up to talk to bots. What bugs us is the other side of the deal. Google gets real-world calls to learn from. You pay for a subscription, buy a specific phone, join a beta, and take the blame if Gemini gets your booking wrong. This is the most convincing reason so far to pay for Gemini, more useful than another chatbot benchmark. But as an "early preview" on one phone line it's a product demo, not a reason to switch phones. TechCrunch notes Meta's agents can also make calls, so this isn't a moat yet.
Our suggestion for early testers
Start with calls where a mistake costs you nothing, like checking whether something is in stock. Leave the transcript open for the first few calls. Before you tap Call for me, read the summary line by line, because those approved details are exactly what a stranger will hear.
Optional: see third-party seller listings for Gemini plans. This is a reseller marketplace, not official Google access and not an endorsement. Call for Me needs a Google AI subscription on your own account.. That link carries our partner code Sk52g, which is how a purchase is attributed to this site. Promotion code UPD3S.
