Gemini 4 Argon Isn't a Reason to Buy AI Ultra. Not Yet.

Google's new flagship goes to cyber defenders first, then API users and AI Ultra, with no date. Should you pay for Ultra to get it?

Short answer

Right now, almost nobody can use it. Don't upgrade to AI Ultra just for Argon until Google says when it's coming.Google announced Gemini 4 Argon on September 30, 2026. It is rolling out first to trusted cyber defenders in Google's Fairwind Program. Paid API customers and Google AI Ultra subscribers are next. Google's only timing is "rolling out soon," and it has given no date. As of today, Google's Gemini plans page doesn't list Argon on any tier, including Ultra.

Who gets Argon, in order

A shocked person stands at the back of a long line waiting for a gift box far ahead on a stage.
Google is releasing Argon to cyber defenders first, then API users and AI Ultra subscribers, with no date given.
A smug person keeps a wallet closed on a couch next to an empty, shut mailbox with a cat on it.
Waiting to pay for AI Ultra until Google gives a release date means you don't pay for something you can't use yet.
  1. 1. Fairwind cyber defenders (now)Google says Argon is rolling out to a set of trusted cyber defenders through its Fairwind Program. The Next Web reports that this group gets the model without its cyber guardrails.
  2. 2. Paid API customers and AI Ultra subscribers (next, no date)Google says broader release to developers, enterprises and consumers starts with these two groups. The announcement gives no date.
  3. 3. Everyone else (unannounced)Google's post doesn't mention the free Gemini app, Google AI Plus or Google AI Pro. The Next Web describes wider access as planned after further testing.

Google's Gemini release notes have no Argon entry. The only update since September 25 is a September 30 post about Skills. Google's plans page currently lists Gemini 3.8 Flash and 3.1 Pro as the headline models for both AI Pro and AI Ultra. Ultra's extras on that page are early access to features like Deep Think and Gemini Spark, not Argon.

What Google is actually claiming

Google says Argon's maximum output per response rises to 1 million tokens, up from 64K. It reports 77.9% on DeepSWE v1.1 and ties for first at 68% on CWE-bench, a vulnerability-fixing test. 9to5Google notes that Argon's DeepSWE score is ahead of Claude Opus 5.5 at 74.2% and GPT-6 Astra at 74.1%. The Next Web, citing Axios, says Argon beat GPT-6 Astra on several coding and knowledge-work benchmarks. All of these numbers come from Google.

There are two catches. According to Bloomberg, as reported by The Next Web and Android Headlines, some Google employees say Argon scores well on benchmarks but does worse on real work, especially coding and front-end design. Google disputes that. Bloomberg also reports that Google dropped Gemini 3.5 Pro, which it had promised for June.

The API price is the real story

Google lists an introductory API price of $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, with cached input 95% cheaper. After the introductory period, the price rises to $4 and $20. Google hasn't said how long the introductory period lasts.

Our take: this pricing is aimed at OpenAI and Anthropic, and it's the most aggressive thing in the announcement. A flagship that matches or beats its rivals on paper, at an intro price this low, will make developers rethink their defaults. The fine print matters, though. The price doubles later, and nobody knows when. If you build on Argon, budget at $4/$20, not $2/$10.

So is AI Ultra worth paying for?

AI Ultra members also receive priority access to new, experimental models as capacity permits.

That line is Google's own description of what Ultra promises for new models: priority, limited by capacity. It doesn't mention Argon or give any timing. The same help page says usage limits depend on the features you use and your Google AI plan. So even after Argon reaches Ultra, how much you can use it isn't spelled out yet.

Our verdict: if Ultra's current extras are already worth it to you (Deep Think, the bigger usage limits, the bundled perks), Argon is a nice bonus whenever it shows up. If you're upgrading only to get Argon, you'd be paying top-tier money for a "soon" with no date, from a company that just dropped a promised Pro model. Wait for the release-notes entry that says it's live on your plan. And it's annoying, again, that Pro subscribers are the ones Google never mentions. For a model sold as the future of Gemini, leaving out the plan most paying users are on is a choice, and not a flattering one.

Before you upgrade for Argon

  • Check Google's plans page to see whether Argon is listed on Ultra in your country.
  • Check the Gemini release notes for an Argon rollout entry.
  • If you're a developer, compare the API's introductory and post-introductory prices against your usage.
  • Don't treat Google's benchmark numbers as independent results; the Bloomberg-reported doubts haven't been settled.
