Gemini 4 Argon Tops Science Charts. Subscribers Get Nothing

Google's overdue flagship leads two science benchmarks and loses a third. Paying Gemini users still can't touch it. Here's why, and what to do.

Short answer

Because Google hasn't released it to you yet. Argon is only going out to approved cybersecurity defenders in Google's Fairwind Program.Google announced Gemini 4 Argon on September 30, 2026. It says the wider release will start with paid API customers and Google AI Ultra subscribers, but it hasn't given a date. On October 6, R&D World updated its report: Argon was still limited to Fairwind participants. As of October 9, Google's Gemini API model list does not include Argon at all. If you pay for Gemini today, including Ultra, there's nothing to switch on.

Who actually has Argon right now

Google's announcement says Argon is rolling out to a set of trusted cyber defenders through its Fairwind Program, and that Google's own teams are using it internally. One named example is Wiz, which uses Argon for defensive scanning through its Scan for Good initiative. VentureBeat reports that Google will give these defenders a version of Argon without cyber guardrails. Google also says it is taking part in the U.S. government's voluntary process for pre-release model access. Google describes the slow rollout as a way to collect feedback from early testers and tighten safeguards before a wider launch.

The science scorecard is a split decision

R&D World looked at the science benchmarks Google published. Argon leads on LABBench2 with 88.8%, ahead of GPT-6 Astra at 85.4%. It also leads on RiemannBench with 76.0%, against Astra's 72.0%. On Terminal-Bench Science 0.1, Argon scores 57.6%, behind both Astra (68.1%) and Claude Opus 5.5 (63.3%). R&D World notes that Google ran Argon on that test itself and took the rival scores from the public leaderboard. On Artificial Analysis's independent Intelligence Index, Argon and Astra both score 53, and Opus 5.5 scores 58.

VentureBeat looked at the wider set of 18 benchmarks Google disclosed. By its count, Argon leads outright on 12 and ties for first on one more. Its biggest losses are to Astra on FrontierSWE v2 and Terminal-Bench Science, where Astra is ahead by 10.5 points on each. That's a headline win, not a clean sweep.

Why 'overdue' is the right word

R&D World recounts that at I/O in May, Google promised Gemini 3.5 Pro within a month. That model kept slipping and appears to have been dropped for a new one. In the meantime, Google released a series of Flash models: 3.6 Flash in July, 3.7 Flash in August and 3.8 Flash on September 2. Today the newest Pro model in the API list is still Gemini 3.1 Pro, and it's labeled preview.

Our take: a press release with a velvet rope

Google got the benchmark headlines back, and the LABBench2 lead is real. But a frontier model you can't use is a promise, not a product. Ultra is Google's most expensive consumer plan, and right now its subscribers are reading about Argon the same way everyone else is. Keeping it with cyber defenders first is a defensible safety decision. We'd rather Google be careful than reckless with a model it is handing to some testers without cyber guardrails. Still, a careful company should give dates, not just say 'as soon as possible.' What annoys us most is that the one science test that looks most like real lab work at a terminal is the one Argon loses.

Overrated: the 12-of-18 headline, since most of those numbers come from Google. Underrated: the token bill. R&D World reports that Argon used about 62,000 output tokens per index task, compared with about 27,000 for Astra. Its cost advantage depends on an introductory price, and Google hasn't said when that price ends. We'll judge Argon when people outside Fairwind can actually use it.

What to do if you pay for Gemini now

  • Don't upgrade to AI Ultra just for Argon. Google has given no date for Ultra access.
  • Watch the Gemini API model list. Argon isn't on it yet.
  • If you rely on terminal-heavy science or agent work, note that Argon trailed GPT-6 Astra on that benchmark.
  • Before you budget for API use, check whether the introductory API price is still in effect.

Why this matters: Google AI plans are sold under these Google One terms, and the terms don't promise every subscriber every benefit. Even when Argon reaches AI Ultra, availability could differ by country or come with other restrictions. Check what your own plan includes rather than assuming you'll get it.
