ChatGPT Now Sells Ads While You Wait. Is Plus the Ransom?

OpenAI is testing visual ads that show up while ChatGPT renders your image. Who sees them, what OpenAI promises, and whether that alone justifies Plus.

Short answer

Yes, ads are coming to ChatGPT image generation. They're a US test starting this month, and they land on the cheap tiers, not on paid plans.OpenAI announced on October 5, 2026 that it will start testing visual ads during image generation in the US later in October, with a first group of advertisers. The ads are labeled and kept separate from the image you asked for. OpenAI says ads don't influence ChatGPT's answers. Under OpenAI's help-center policy, ChatGPT ads run on Free and Go, while Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu stay ad-free. Android Headlines reports that Plus, Pro and Enterprise subscribers won't see the visual ads.

What's actually changing

So far, ChatGPT's ads have sat next to text answers. This format is visual. According to BleepingComputer, OpenAI says the ads can show product inspiration, a product in use, or what a service is like. Android Headlines describes a sponsored banner below the progress bar while the image renders. The Next Web reports that OpenAI's mockup shows a carousel ad from a made-up brand. On the advertiser side, OpenAI is adding measurement and attribution partners such as AppsFlyer, Adjust, Branch, Triple Whale and Kochava, which let brands track whether a click turned into a sale.

Ads will be clearly labeled

That line matters because labeling is the main protection OpenAI is offering here. The other one is guardrails. The Next Web reports that before an ad is shown, the system checks whether the conversation is emotionally vulnerable, sensitive or otherwise unsuitable. DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science will review how the brand-safety standards are applied, working in a controlled environment without access to real conversations. OpenAI's help center, as summarized by SSD Nodes, also says conversations aren't shared with advertisers. Turning off ad personalization still leaves ads based on the current chat.

Who's affected

Where you stand

  • Free users in the US: the people this test is built for, starting later in October with a first group of advertisers.
  • Go users: Go is a paid plan, but it's still ad-supported, and SSD Nodes notes it has no ad-free option.
  • Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, Edu: ad-free under OpenAI's ad policy.
  • Outside the US: this visual format is a US-only test for now. The Next Web reports that ChatGPT ads have run in 31 European countries since late August.

Our take: the free tier just became a storefront

Let's be honest about what this is. A text ad under an answer is easy to scroll past. An image ad shown in the seconds you spend staring at a progress bar is built to catch your eye. OpenAI picked the one moment in ChatGPT when you're guaranteed to be looking at the screen and doing nothing else. That's clever, and it's exactly why it will annoy people. Even TechCrunch's write-up says the ads could disrupt the experience and might push casual users toward paying. We'd go further: that push is the point, not a side effect.

The detail that annoys us most is in the help center. According to SSD Nodes' summary, Free does offer an ad-free mode, but it comes with lower daily message limits and no image generation. So the ad-free free option can't help with images, which is exactly where the new ads live. If you want images without ads, you need a plan above Go.

Overrated: the fear that ads will start writing your answers. OpenAI has said repeatedly that they won't, and outside verifiers are involved. Underrated: the fact that Go is now a paid plan that still shows ads. If you pay a small monthly fee and still see a sponsored carousel every time you make a meme, Go starts to look like the worst deal in the lineup. Watch the EU too. The Next Web reports that ChatGPT's DSA duties, including a public ad repository, start in January. That may give Europeans more visibility into these ads than Americans get.

So, is Plus worth it just to dodge ads?

Paying removes ads, but avoiding this test alone may not justify an upgrade.
  1. Count your image promptsIf you make a few images a month, a labeled banner while one renders costs you a few seconds. Don't pay just for that.
  2. Check how you feel about GoIf you're already on Go mainly for images, the ads hit you on every render. That's the strongest case for comparing Go with Plus side by side.
  3. Check Settings > Ad Controls firstOpenAI's help center points to an Ad Controls area for ad settings, including personalization. It won't remove ads, but you can limit how they're targeted before you spend money.
  4. Decide on everything Plus offers, not on ads aloneRemoving ads is a bonus. Pay for Plus only if the higher limits and features are already close to worth it for you.

Our rule of thumb

If the ads alone are what push you over the edge, wait until the test actually reaches your account. This is a limited US test, and it may change or shrink before it becomes the normal free experience.
