The direct answer
Open your ChatGPT project and choose ••• → Project settings → Memory → Project-only memory, then Save.Once effective, this prevents project chats from referencing outside conversations or saved memories; OpenAI says changes may take a few hours.Source: Projects in ChatGPT · 2026-09-22
You can change an existing project without recreating it. OpenAI documents this update across all ChatGPT plans. Conversations within the project can still inform each other, while project information stays out of memory used by outside chats.

Shared projects automatically use project-only memory and cannot switch to default. ChatGPT Work is unavailable inside project-only projects.

Removing every collaborator does not unlock default memory. Switching memory modes also leaves existing project chats and files in place as usable context.

Suggested check: separate source material from memory
For a project called Client A, review its chats and files for Client B material you may already have included. If an answer mentions Client B, check that local material before treating the answer as evidence of outside-memory access. Use a harmless sample task for this review, and record the unwanted detail and where you found it.
Suggested stopping point
After allowing the documented delay, reopen the settings and confirm your selection. If the setting persists and your sample task is satisfactory, stop changing settings and resume work. If the option remains unavailable, ask your workspace administrator to review the prerequisites. If unexpected context continues, preserve a concrete example for support instead of repeatedly toggling memory.
