OpenAI Halved Pro 200. Claude and Gemini Just Got a Shot
From October 30, Pro 200 gives you half the Codex and Work usage at the same price. Here's whether it's a squeeze and what to check before then.

Short answer
Yes, for heavy users this is a price increase in disguise. Pro 200 costs the same, but from October 30 it includes half the ChatGPT Work and Codex usage. The only plan above it is the new Pro 500.The Next Web reports that OpenAI announced the change at DevDay on September 29, 2026. Pro 200's included Work and Codex usage falls from 20 times to 10 times the Plus allowance, and GPT-6 Pro chat messages fall from 200 to 100 a week. Existing subscribers keep their current limits until October 29 and get a one-time grant of usage credits that expires at the end of the year. If you max out Pro 200 today, check your usage and test an alternative before your first renewal after October 29.Source: OpenAI halves Pro 200 usage and launches a $500 ChatGPT plan at DevDay (The Next Web) · 2026-10-11
What actually changed on September 29
According to The Next Web, OpenAI reopened Pro 200 to new subscribers at DevDay 2026, but with a lower allowance. From October 30, Work and Codex usage drops from 20x to 10x Plus, and GPT-6 Pro chat messages are halved to 100 a week. Pro 500 sits above it as the only Pro plan with Ultrafast, which OpenAI says generates up to eight times faster than standard in Codex. WinBuzzer adds that OpenAI had paused Pro 200 sign-ups on September 10, citing demand for its Astra model. OpenAI's Thibault Sottiaux described the new Pro 200 as 10x the Plus allowance, against 5x for Pro 100.

Who gets hit, and when
WinBuzzer reports that eligible Pro 200 subscribers keep their previous allowance through October 29, 2026, as long as they stay subscribed, and then move to the lower allowance. Eligibility covers people who were subscribed at the cutoff or in the seven days before it. OpenAI hasn't published the cutoff date and says it will email affected customers. The Next Web and Hardware Busters both report a one-time credit grant worth about $2,500 for existing subscribers. The credits expire at the end of 2026. Hardware Busters says OpenAI's email credits the recalculation to more capable and efficient models, and that it offers no grandfathering.

Our take: the classic hook-then-charge move
Calling this a better value because the models got smarter doesn't hold up. Hardware Busters does the maths: the cost per Plus-equivalent of usage doubles on Pro 200, and getting your old 20x back means moving to Pro 500 at about 2.5 times the bill. Power users built their Codex workflows around a generous Pro 200. Now they're the ones paying to keep what they had. The credits soften the next two or three months, then disappear on December 31. That's a cushion, not compensation. The Asia Business Daily reports that Korean firms are already feeling the squeeze, quoting a CEO at DevDay who was shocked by the new top price.
Here's the underrated part, though. OpenAI says it won't bring back the five-hour limit on Pro 200, so you can use your weekly allowance in bursts. Claude and Gemini both still meter usage in five-hour windows. If you work in long sprints, half of ChatGPT's allowance with no session cap could still beat a bigger number you can't spend when you need it.

Claude Max vs. Google AI Ultra: the obvious places to look
Anthropic's pricing page sells Max in two tiers, with "5x or 20x more usage" per five-hour session than Claude Pro. Weekly limits also apply, and Claude Code shares the same usage pool as chat. Google's subscriptions page says AI Ultra has up to 20 times the Gemini usage of AI Pro. Limits refresh every five hours until you hit a weekly cap, and Ultra 20x gets the highest limits for agent models in Google Antigravity. Each multiplier is measured against that company's own lower plan, so 20x on Claude isn't the same as 20x on ChatGPT.

Our verdict: Claude Max 20x is the most direct rival to the old Pro 200 for people who live in a coding agent. Gemini Ultra is underrated if you already use Google's tools. Neither one is automatically cheaper per unit of real work. The only honest test is to run your own workload on each for a week before October 30.
Before October 30
- Watch for OpenAI's email confirming whether you're eligible to keep your old allowance and receive the credits.
- Check how much of your weekly Codex and Work allowance you actually use. If it's under half, the cut may not affect you.
- Spend the one-time credits before they expire at the end of 2026.
- Run a real week of work on Claude Max or Google AI Ultra before committing to Pro 500.
- Downgrade or cancel before your first renewal after October 29 if the 10x allowance isn't worth it to you.

If we increase our subscription prices, we will give you at least 30 days' notice

Why this matters: openai.com blocked our fetch today, so we read the clause in an archived copy of OpenAI's terms. The clause is about price increases. Pro 200's list price isn't changing; its allowance is. So it's unclear whether this promise covers the cut at all. Either way, the announcement on September 29 came more than 30 days before the October 30 switch. Hardware Busters argues that EU consumers may have a right to cancel free of charge when a change significantly affects their access. That's the author's reading, not a legal ruling, so check with your national consumer authority if it matters to you.
