ChatGPT Isn’t Finished. Your Loyalty Should Be.

ChatGPT still leads Comscore’s prompt rankings. Before declaring Gemini the winner, try a better test: which assistant actually finishes your work?

Is ChatGPT’s lead over?

No. Losing ground isn’t the same as losing the lead.Comscore’s September 22 report puts ChatGPT at 50% of measured AI prompt volume in June, down from 70% in January. Gemini climbed from 17% to 30%; Claude rose from 2% to 11%. ChatGPT still leads this comparison.

My take: stop treating an assistant like a sports team. Give Gemini and Claude a chance to beat ChatGPT on your actual work. But don’t turn curiosity into three recurring bills. Exclusive loyalty deserves more scrutiny; paying for multiple assistants still needs a practical justification.

A smaller share, a bigger audience

Comscore also reports that ChatGPT’s multiplatform visitation increased from 59 million to 99 million year over year. The share decline covers January–June 2026; the visitor comparison covers a year. These are different measures and periods, not contradictory results.

A smaller share can still represent a bigger audience.

These are panel-based prompt-volume shares, not subscription shares or quality scores. The public Comscore release doesn’t specify the geographic scope, so it doesn’t independently verify the question’s “US” qualifier. Its aggregate figures also don’t establish how many individuals use multiple assistants.

Make Gemini earn the switch

The annoying part of choosing an assistant is the pressure to crown one universal winner. I’d rather judge the boring stuff: did it follow the brief, preserve the important details and leave you with less editing? A dazzling answer to somebody else’s demonstration prompt should count for very little.

If ChatGPT is your default, put it against Gemini and Claude on a task you repeat. Don’t award Gemini the trophy because its share rose, or dismiss Claude because its slice is smaller. My standard is deliberately unglamorous: the winner should make next Tuesday easier.

Check usage rights before including creative tasks in your assistant comparison.
  1. Choose three real jobsPick tasks such as revising your own email, explaining a difficult passage and outlining a project. Use material you have permission to share. Write down what a successful answer must include before comparing outputs.
  2. Give each assistant the same briefKeep the source material, instructions and desired format consistent. Record which model or mode you use where identified. Treat the exercise as a comparison of your available setups, not a definitive ranking of the companies.
  3. Count the cleanupRecord factual corrections, missed instructions and follow-up prompts. Verify important claims against original sources. Give more weight to an answer you can use than to one that merely sounds polished.
  4. Set a reason to payBefore adding a subscription, name the recurring job it would improve and the specific paid capability you need. If you cannot identify both, postpone the purchase. Repeat the comparison when your workload changes.

Google’s Gemini Privacy Hub confirms that Google’s Terms of Service apply to Gemini Apps. The quoted upload requirement matters when choosing comparison material: being able to access a document is not itself the permission required to upload it.

For the comparison, I’d use your own non-sensitive writing or a deliberately invented sample. Keep confidential work out of an informal assistant bake-off. The point is to evaluate the result, not to reproduce your entire working environment.

Keep one subscription if it earns its place

If you already like your setup, I wouldn’t cancel anything over a market-share chart. If you’re tired of repeatedly fixing an assistant’s answers, that frustration is a better reason to audition a rival. Paying for one tool can still be sensible. Refusing to consider another is the habit I’d retire.
