Short answer
Email support@openai.com. That's the fallback OpenAI named itself on September 29, and as of today the incident is marked resolved, so support chat is working again. On September 29, 2026, OpenAI's status page posted an incident titled "Support available via email." It said the Help Center and support chat were unavailable and told users they could still reach support by emailing support@openai.com. The Help Center came back within minutes, but chat stayed down for several more hours. The final update says the support chat problem is fixed and that users can contact support through the Help Center as usual. If the chat widget fails you again, use the same email address.Source: OpenAI Status: Support available via email · 2026-10-12

All timestamps are from OpenAI's incident page, which lists times without a time zone. By those timestamps, the incident ran about five and a half hours from first post to resolution. OpenAI did not give a cause or a regional scope, and it did not mention any compensation. Treat anything you read claiming otherwise as unverified.

Why this quote matters: it is OpenAI's own published instruction for what to do when the usual support routes are down. It names a specific address, so you don't need to rely on third-party "contact OpenAI" directories.
This was a support outage, not a ChatGPT outage
This is the distinction people keep missing. The incident affected the support channels: the Help Center and the support chat. OpenAI's incident page lists no affected components. It is not reported as a problem with chatting in ChatGPT itself, which the status page tracks separately under components such as Conversations and Login. If ChatGPT answered your prompts normally that evening and only the help widget failed, that matches this incident. If your conversations were failing, check the status page for a separate incident.

The status page does show an open incident today, but it's unrelated: delayed Costs data in the Compliance API. OpenAI says ChatGPT usage isn't affected by it. Don't confuse it with the support chat problem, which is closed.

If support chat fails on you again
- Check the OpenAI status page first to see whether OpenAI has acknowledged a support or Help Center incident.
- Email support@openai.com, the fallback OpenAI named in this incident.
- Send it from the email address on your ChatGPT account, so support can match the message to your account.
- Describe the problem in a single message: what you tried, the error text, and when it happened.
- Don't post account details or payment information in public forums while you wait.

The take: a chat widget shouldn't be your only door
Our view: the problem isn't that a support widget broke for an evening. Things break. The problem is how dependent paying users have become on one help widget. Most subscribers wouldn't know there's an email fallback until a status page tells them, and the status page is the last place anyone checks. The email address was the most useful part of this whole incident, and it gets less attention than it deserves. OpenAI should put it somewhere you can see it without an outage, not only in an incident post. To its credit, OpenAI posted fast, named a real fallback, and didn't pretend the chat was working. That's better than staying silent. Still, a five-hour gap in chat support at a company this size is fair to complain about.

Add support@openai.com to your contacts or notes before you need it. You won't be able to look it up through the Help Center if the Help Center is the thing that's down.
