Codex’s 401 Outage: Why Should Subscribers Pay Twice?

OpenAI says the September 25 Codex outage is resolved. Here’s what failed, what to do now, and why its API-key workaround deserves scrutiny.

What happened—and is it fixed?

Your evening’s debugging assignment may have been OpenAI’s outage.OpenAI confirmed a Codex outage on September 25 and marked it resolved that day. A contemporaneous GitHub report described 401 Unauthorized errors in Codex Desktop and the CLI despite ChatGPT authentication; signing in again did not help that reporter. The report also named the ChatGPT desktop app. OpenAI’s incident record lists Codex Web, Codex API, CLI and the VS Code extension—not a confirmed outage of every ChatGPT feature.

The maddening detail was the wording: “Incorrect API key provided” appeared even though the reporter was authenticated through ChatGPT. They described both clients failing after working earlier that day and said the public status page still showed green. That is a firsthand account, not an OpenAI finding about the underlying cause.

OpenAI acknowledged an internal issue, later said it had identified the root cause, applied mitigation and reported recovery. The incident page does not explain the technical failure. During the disruption, it advised that API-key login would restore access. That was an incident-specific workaround, not a published explanation of why ChatGPT authentication failed.

My advice: stop the login treadmill

An exhausted person runs inside a hamster wheel secured by an enormous padlock.
Repeated login attempts cannot fix an outage on OpenAI’s side.
A skeptical person tests a broken footbridge beneath a green signal lamp.
Check that your own access works after the service status turns green.
  1. Retry your normal workflow before changing anythingWith this incident marked resolved, my first move would be one ordinary retry. If it fails, check the incident page for subsequent updates before reinstalling clients or dismantling your configuration.
  2. Confirm how you are authenticatedIn the CLI, codex login status shows the active authentication method. OpenAI documents ChatGPT sign-in and API-key sign-in as distinct access methods. Record which you use before troubleshooting.
  3. Escalate a persistent failure with useful evidenceOpenAI Support is available through the bottom-right chat bubble at help.openai.com. Include the error, timestamp and time zone, client version, operating system and subscription plan. Remove secrets from screenshots; OpenAI explicitly warns against sharing the auth.json credential file.

The API escape hatch has a separate bill

Source: Managing billing for ChatGPT and the API platform · 2026-09-26

OpenAI’s authentication documentation says API-key usage is charged through OpenAI Platform at API rates instead of using included ChatGPT plan credits. Its billing guide confirms that API usage is billed separately from a ChatGPT subscription. API-key authentication supports local Codex workflows, while Codex cloud requires ChatGPT sign-in. Switching credentials therefore changes both billing and available functionality.

My take: a separately metered escape hatch is an emergency option, not a satisfying answer to a subscriber. If I pay for a workflow, I want recovery guidance that gets that workflow back. Asking me to consider another bill deserves a prominent explanation, even when the workaround is technically useful. I would use it only after deciding the interrupted task justified the extra spend.

A green dashboard should not end the conversation

StatusGator’s own monitoring record says it detected the September 25 authentication disruption before official acknowledgment, recording a 16-minute gap. That is the tracker’s measurement, not OpenAI’s incident timeline. Separately, OpenAI confirms elevated errors across ChatGPT and Codex on September 3. These establish two distinct disruptions; they do not establish a shared cause.

For Plus and Pro subscribers, I think reliability deserves as much scrutiny as model capability. My renewal test would be brutally practical: how often did the tool help me finish, and how often did I spend that time diagnosing the tool? A premium badge is overrated if it distracts from that question. Clear incident communication is underrated.
