Short answer
If you're on Free or Go, you'll see ads. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu stay ad-free. But Plus isn't strictly the only way out.OpenAI brought ChatGPT Ads to Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and Taiwan, taking the program past 60 countries. Ads appear only on the Free and Go plans. In earlier ad markets, Free users have also had an ad-free mode, but it comes with lower usage limits and loses features such as image generation and deep research. We couldn't confirm whether that mode is offered in the new markets, so check your own ad settings before you pay for anything.Source: TechNode Global: OpenAI launches ChatGPT Ads in Southeast Asia and Taiwan · 2026-10-04; Standard-Examiner: Tech Matters: Ad-free on ChatGPT · 2026-10-04
What changed, and when
PPC Land reports that OpenAI announced the expansion on September 23, 2026, and the rollout began that same day. Regional outlets such as TechNode Global dated their coverage September 24, which is the difference between US and Asian time zones. The new markets are Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and Taiwan. According to PPC Land, OpenAI's help center now lists 63 countries, and some have no published activation date yet.

There's money behind the push. TechNode reports that OpenAI announced on August 31 that ads had reached a $1 billion annualized run rate in under 200 days. Marketing-Interactive adds that tens of thousands of advertisers are running campaigns, and that OpenAI is testing "sponsored agents", which let you chat with a business's agent after clicking its ad.

Ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives you.
OpenAI's privacy policy, as quoted by Help Net Security (August 31, 2026)Source: Help Net Security: Free ChatGPT users get ads picked from whatever they just asked about · 2026-10-04
Why this matters: this line is OpenAI's whole promise to ad-tier users. Help Net Security reports that ads are picked using your current conversation topic, your general location and your device type. Older chat history is only used if you agree to personalized ads, and you can change that choice later.

What to do if you're on Free or Go

- Open your ad settingsAd controls are in ChatGPT's Settings menu. There you can turn personalization off, dismiss an ad, give feedback and clear the data used for ads. Turning personalization off doesn't remove ads. They're still matched to your current conversation.
- Look for an ad-free option before upgradingIn earlier ad markets, Free users could switch to an ad-free mode. The trade-off is lower usage limits, upload limits, and no image generation or deep research. We couldn't confirm it's offered in the newly launched countries, so check whether your settings show it.
- Go users: be aware your paid plan still shows adsGo doesn't remove ads. If ads are the problem, the ad-free paid plans start at Plus.

Our take: Go is the real loser here
Free users showing ads is the oldest deal on the internet. Fine. What stings is Go: you pay, and you still get ads. That makes Go feel less like a plan and more like a waiting room, there to make Plus look like the obvious answer. If you upgrade, upgrade because you need Plus's features, not just to escape a sponsored card. If ads are your only complaint, a slimmer ad-free Free mode, where it's offered, is the underrated option that nobody at OpenAI seems keen to promote.
As for 'ads don't influence answers': OpenAI says it, and nobody outside OpenAI can check it. PPC Land notes that independent performance data exists only for the US, so for users in Jakarta or Taipei this is taken on trust. The sponsored-agents test is the part to watch. Once you're chatting with a brand's bot after clicking an ad, the line between an answer and a pitch gets thin, labels or not.
Don't fall for 'ad-free' shortcuts
Shared logins or account resellers are not a fix for ads or usage limits, and they can break OpenAI's terms. Stick to your own account and the official plans.
