ChatGPT Pro 500: Are You Paying for Brains or Just Speed?

OpenAI's new top ChatGPT plan is mostly a speed upgrade with a much higher bill. Here's who should pay for it, and why most Pro users shouldn't.

Prices last read 2026-10-08

Short answer

Pro 500 is for people whose bottleneck is waiting on Codex or ChatGPT Work, not the model's intelligence. Among Pro plans, its main exclusive is Astra Ultrafast, a much faster mode for GPT-6 Astra.OpenAI announced the plan at DevDay on September 29, 2026. Ultrafast works in Codex and ChatGPT Work, and among self-serve plans only Pro $500 gets it. You can't get it on Plus, Pro $100, Pro $200 or Business, even by buying extra credits. OpenAI says Ultrafast generates tokens up to 8x faster than Standard mode in Codex, but it also uses up your included allowance at 8x the Standard rate. If you want a smarter model, this plan doesn't give you one.

What OpenAI actually shipped

OpenAI now sells Pro in three tiers, at $100, $200 and $500 a month, according to its pricing page. Every's DevDay write-up describes the top tier as having OpenAI's highest usage limits plus exclusive access to Astra Ultrafast, a premium speed tier for GPT-6 Astra. On speed, OpenAI's own documentation says Ultrafast generates tokens up to 8x faster than Standard in Codex. It also says this measures token generation, not how long a whole task takes. Reported tokens-per-second figures differ: Every quotes OpenAI as saying 250, while The Next Web reports up to 300 in Codex. Treat the 8x figure from OpenAI's documentation as the reliable one.

A bored person waits beside a huge hourglass while a small robot works very slowly.
The new plan's main change is how quickly the work comes back, not how smart the model is.

Ultrafast mode is available in Codex and ChatGPT Work on the Pro $500/month plan and eligible Enterprise and Edu plans.

This sentence matters because it limits where you get the speed: Codex and ChatGPT Work. It also matters what Ultrafast costs in usage. OpenAI's speed page says it uses included subscription limits at 8x the Standard rate and purchased credits at 6x. On Pro $500, it draws from included usage first, then from credits. Every's Dan Shipper called the demos "mind-blowing, but also wallet-blowing" and warned that Ultrafast will burn through your usage fast.

The part Pro 200 users should care about

According to The Next Web, Pro 200 reopens to new subscribers with less usage. From October 30, its included Work and Codex usage drops from 20x to 10x the Plus allowance, and its weekly GPT-6 Pro chat messages go from 200 to 100. TNW reports that existing Pro 200 subscribers keep their current limits until October 29 and get a one-time grant of usage credits, which expire at the end of the year. OpenAI's pricing page says Pro plans currently have no five-hour limit.

Pro 500 might make sense if you…

  • Spend most of your paid hours in Codex or ChatGPT Work, not regular chat
  • Lose real money waiting on long agent runs, where faster token output saves billable time
  • Can tell the difference between faster token generation and faster task completion (OpenAI says they aren't the same)
  • Are fine with Ultrafast using included usage at 8x the Standard rate
  • Use a Pro 200 plan whose usage will run short after the October 30 change

Our take: you're paying for time, not intelligence

Let's be blunt. Pro 500 doesn't give you a smarter ChatGPT. It gives you the same GPT-6 Astra, faster, and it uses up your allowance much faster in Ultrafast mode. That's a legitimate product for a narrow group: agencies and solo developers running Codex all day, where waiting is the expensive part. For everyone else it's a luxury upgrade. The leak era even called it 'Pro Max', and the name fits the iPhone-style pricing.

The more annoying part isn't the $500 tier. It's what happened to the tier below it. Halving Pro 200's Work and Codex allowance in the same announcement makes the new plan look like the fix for a problem OpenAI just created. If you're a Pro 200 user who never hit the old limits, ignore the upsell. Check your actual usage after October 30 before deciding anything.

There's also the competition. Decrypt's comparison points out that Anthropic's and Google's top consumer AI tiers sit well below $500 a month, and that Google cut its Ultra pricing in May. Other reports describe that Google change differently, so check Google's own page before comparing.

Our verdict: overrated for almost everyone, underrated for the small group whose Codex queue is effectively their payroll. Rivals have been lowering their top prices while OpenAI has raised its ceiling. If speed turns out to be the only difference at the top end, other providers can compete on speed too, and $500 will look hard to defend.

Before you upgrade

OpenAI's speed page says Ultrafast's 8x figure is about token generation, not end-to-end task time. Test whether your real workflows wait on generation, or on tests, builds and tool calls, before paying for speed.
