In 2026 it's a work tool, not a toy chatbot

Most people who pay for Gemini are no longer using it for fun questions. They use it for Deep Research reports, for drafting and triage inside Gmail, Docs and Drive, and for making images and video with Gemini Omni. A growing group also uses the coding and creative tools that come with the plan, such as Antigravity and Flow. If none of that describes your week, the free tier probably covers you and this purchase is a luxury.

What changed, and why it matters

May 2026: At I/O, Google rebuilt its AI plans. It added a new Ultra tier and launched Omni and Daily Brief. It also dropped fixed quotas. Pro now has compute-based limits that refresh every five hours up to a weekly cap, and the bundled AI credits were removed without a price cut. Annual subscribers got the change in the middle of their contracts. Spark, the always-on agent, is Ultra-only and started as a US beta.

Late May 2026: After complaints that limits ran out too fast, Google capped how much quota one prompt can use, made Flash-Lite prompts free, and stopped charging quota for failed requests.

June 2026: A backend fault left Gemini failing to answer some users on and off for much of June 10.

August 2026: Google added a new set of connected apps, including Otter.ai, Wix, Ticketmaster and Zocdoc.

September 2026: Gemini 3.8 Flash arrived, the third Flash release in a short stretch, aimed at coding and agent tasks.

Shared plan or full price: be honest with yourself

Google's only official way to share is a family group: members must live in the same country, and each person can join only one group in any 12 months. A reseller seat can conflict with Google's terms if it is a shared login or a family slot filled with strangers. If Google enforces those terms, the seat can vanish mid-term, the account can be restricted, and Google support won't help you. On a shared login, other people can also read your chats. And some limits, including Flow and Antigravity, are shared across the whole family group, so a stranger's heavy use can eat into yours.

A shared plan suits light users who want to try Pro-level Gemini without committing. Pay full price if you put client or company data into Gemini, depend on it for work, code heavily in Antigravity, or can't afford to lose access with no warning.

Before you buy

Ask whether you get access on your own Google account or a login handed to you. Only the first keeps your history private.

Find out which country the group is set in and whether joining uses up your one family switch for the year.

Ask what happens if the seat is dropped before the term ends: replacement, refund, or nothing.

After you join, check Gemini's usage page for a week to see whether the shared limits actually fit how you work.
