YouTube is the TV now, and the radio too
Forget the idea of YouTube as a place for cat clips and tutorials. In 2026 it is the single biggest thing on American television screens, ahead of every network and every other streamer in Nielsen's monthly measurements. People put it on the living-room TV, leave podcasts running while they cook, fall asleep to hour-long video essays and use it as their music app. That is the real reason to pay: long sessions, the phone screen locked, the TV on, no ad break every few minutes.
If you open YouTube for five minutes a day, you don't need any of this. If it runs for hours, ads are a tax on your attention, and Premium is how you stop paying it.
What changed in 2026
February 2026: a global outage knocked out the homepage, Shorts, sign-in and TV apps. YouTube blamed a failure in its recommendations system. July 2026 brought another outage of about two hours, when videos would not load on apps or the web. Paying doesn't protect you from either.
March 2026: Premium Lite, the cheaper tier, got background play and downloads. Music is still not ad-free on it, but for many viewers the gap to full Premium got much smaller.
April 2026: YouTube announced US price increases across Individual, Family, Lite and Music Premium. Existing subscribers started paying them in June 2026. In August 2026 another round was confirmed for parts of Europe, Singapore and other regions, applying from billing dates on or after September 23, 2026.
August 2026: YouTube said Premium Lite will expand to every country where Premium is sold, but gave no date.
Shared plan or full price: be honest about the risk
Here's the part sellers skip. YouTube's Family plan is for people who live at the same address as the family manager. Since September 2025 YouTube has been flagging members who don't, warning them and then pausing their Premium perks after 14 days. A shared plan with strangers can conflict with those terms. If YouTube notices, you lose ad-free viewing, background play, downloads and YouTube Music, and nobody can promise it won't happen.
A shared plan suits someone who mostly wants fewer ads and can live with a sudden interruption. Pay full price if you rely on YouTube Music every day, keep downloads for travel, work on the platform, or simply can't stand the idea of your perks vanishing halfway through a paid period.
Four checks before you buy
1. Find out whether you join with your own Google account or get given one. Never hand over the password to your main account.
2. Get the seller's policy in writing on what happens if YouTube pauses your membership: a replacement, a refund, or nothing.
3. Check whether Premium Lite is available where you live and whether it already covers what you actually use.
4. On day one, test the features you are paying for: ad-free playback, background play, downloads and Music. Report problems straight away.
