What it is

Watcha is for people who already have Netflix and are bored of it. It began as a recommendation engine, and that side, Watchapedia, is still the bigger draw: a ratings and reviews site with millions of monthly users and hundreds of millions of reviews. The streaming service is the add-on. It offers independent films, older titles and hard-to-find picks, chosen by taste rather than by blockbuster budget.

That focus is also its weakness. Critics say the niche strategy never reached a mass audience. Monthly active users fell from about 1.33 million in early 2022 to about 470,000 by May 2025. So treat Watcha as a second subscription for film nerds, not your main one.

The year Watcha went up for sale

August 2025: a Seoul court opened rehabilitation proceedings (Korea's court-supervised restructuring) after one of Watcha's investors asked for it. Watcha had unpaid bonds and negative equity, and it had no big parent company to rescue it.

February 2026: Watcha hired an adviser to run a formal sale, and its CEO promised no break in service. April 2026: the sale fell apart when talks stalled.

July and August 2026: the content company Kino Lights was picked as the preferred buyer in July. No rival bids came in at the August auction, so Kino Lights became the buyer. It says it will build on Watchapedia and the streaming service.

September 2026: the court gave Watcha another month to file its rehabilitation plan, with a new deadline in mid-October. Creditors still have to approve the plan and the court still has to confirm it. The ownership story is not over.

Shared or full price: be honest about the risk

A shared Premium plan suits the curious viewer. You want a few months of arthouse cinema, you don't care about a personal watch history, and you can accept that another household is on the same account. Given how uncertain Watcha's future is, a short commitment makes sense.

Pay full price if you want your own ratings, your own recommendations and full control of the account. Sharing an account outside your household can conflict with Watcha's own terms. If it does, the account can be restricted or closed, and Watcha owes the people sharing it nothing. Read the terms and decide for yourself. Don't treat a shared seat as a right.

Before you buy

Check that the films you actually want are on Watcha today. Niche catalogues rotate, and a new owner may change them.

Keep your commitment short. The rehabilitation plan and the change of owner are still unresolved, so avoid paying far ahead.

Find out what the seller does if the account stops working or the service changes: replacement, refund, or nothing.

Confirm that the seat is really Premium and ask how many people share it, so you aren't fighting for a stream on a Friday night.
