In 2026, most people use Suno as a sketchpad. Songwriters test a lyric in five genres before booking a session. Video creators make background tracks they don't want to license. Plenty of people make a birthday song, a parody or a joke about their dog. Producers pull stems and samples to build on. Very few serious users ship a Suno track as the final product, and if you plan to, the changes below matter more to you than to anyone else.
What changed: licensed models, capped downloads, more lawsuits
August 2026: BMG signed a deal with Suno that included a settlement over its catalog. Suno announced a new downloads policy and new Terms of Service the same month.
September 2026: that policy took effect on September 3. Paid plans now have a monthly download cap, Pro's lower than Premier's, and it applies to songs you made before the change. Free accounts lost commercial downloads. On September 9 Suno launched v6, v6-wild and v6-mini, built with licensed material from Warner Music Group, BMG and Believe, and retired every older model. The two full models are for Pro and Premier only. New features include editing a song section with a prompt, using images or video as a reference, and separating instruments.
The legal fight didn't end there. On September 18, Sony and Universal filed a new suit. Suno has also admitted that v6 training included user interactions and creations, which weakens its clean-slate story. Competitors are moving too: ElevenLabs shipped Music v2.5 on September 11, with lossless downloads on every plan.
Shared plan or your own account?
A shared plan makes sense if you mostly generate, listen and experiment, and you rarely export. The download cap now belongs to the account, so on a shared plan you're splitting it with strangers.
Pay full price if you release music, monetize videos or need your library to last. Be clear about this: sharing an account can conflict with Suno's terms. The risks are real. The account can be suspended, your songs can disappear with it, and it may be hard to show that a commercial right belongs to you rather than to the account holder. Read the terms yourself and stay within them.

Ask how many people share the account and how the monthly download cap is split among them.
Confirm that the plan tier includes v6 and v6-wild, not just the free v6-mini.
Decide whether you need commercial rights you can prove are yours. If you do, get your own account.
