One Coding Agent, Three AIs: Why Claude Pro Is the Odd One Out

An XDA writer swapped a pile of AI subscriptions for OpenCode. ChatGPT Plus plugs right in. Claude Pro doesn't, and that's Anthropic's choice.

Short answer

Mostly yes. One open-source agent can run all three model families, but your Claude Pro or Max plan can't be one of the ways in.On September 27, 2026, XDA's Mahnoor Faisal described moving to OpenCode, an open-source coding agent that supports more than 75 LLM providers. They kept ChatGPT Plus as their only subscription, reach Claude and Gemini through their APIs when they need them, and use local models for lighter work. The catch is Claude. OpenCode's own docs say Anthropic explicitly prohibits plugins that let you use Claude Pro/Max in OpenCode, so Claude goes through a separately billed API key.

What the XDA setup actually is

OpenCode calls itself an open-source agent that helps you write code in your terminal, IDE or desktop. It connects to 75+ providers through Models.dev, local models included. You can sign in with OpenAI to use a ChatGPT Plus or Pro account, or with GitHub to use Copilot. Faisal's version: ChatGPT Plus is the one flat-rate plan, Claude and Gemini are pay-per-use API keys for occasional use, and local models cover the cheap stuff. In their words, they still get the models they want without keeping a separate monthly subscription for each one.

  1. Connect the subscription you keepIn OpenCode, run /connect, choose OpenAI, then pick the ChatGPT Plus/Pro option. A browser window opens so you can sign in. GitHub Copilot and GitLab Duo subscriptions also work in OpenCode with no setup, according to its docs.
  2. Add Claude with an API key, not your Pro loginCreate a key in Anthropic's Claude Console. Anthropic says developers building on Claude should authenticate with an API key through the Console or a supported cloud provider. API usage is billed per use, separately from any Claude.ai plan.
  3. Add Gemini through GoogleOpenCode's provider docs walk through Google Vertex AI, which needs a Google Cloud project with the Vertex AI API turned on.
  4. Point light tasks at a local modelOpenCode works with Ollama, LM Studio and llama.cpp's llama-server. For Ollama, the docs suggest raising num_ctx to about 16k–32k if tool calls fail.

Why Claude Pro doesn't plug in

Anthropic's Claude Code legal page says subscription OAuth logins are meant for ordinary use of Claude Code and Anthropic's own apps. It also says third-party developers can't route requests through Free, Pro or Max plan credentials, and it reserves the right to enforce that without notice. OpenCode's docs say third-party plugins for Claude Pro/Max exist but Anthropic explicitly prohibits them. OpenCode stopped bundling those plugins as of version 1.3.0. WinBuzzer reported in February 2026 that enforcement began on January 9 and that Anthropic clarified its documentation on February 19, naming OpenCode among the affected tools.

Don't reach for the plugin

If you see a plugin promising to run your Claude Pro or Max plan inside OpenCode, skip it. Anthropic prohibits it and says it may enforce without warning. Use an API key, or use Claude Code itself with your subscription.

Our take: the model-agnostic agent is coming for your subscriptions

Here's our opinion. The flat AI subscription made sense when each company's app was the only good way to reach its model. Agents like OpenCode take that away. Once your workflow sits in one tool, the model becomes a dropdown, and you start asking a simple question: which plan actually earns a spot in my budget? OpenAI saw this coming and lets ChatGPT Plus sign straight into a rival's agent. That's smart. A $20-a-month habit becomes the default 'one subscription' people keep. Anthropic went the other way. If you want Claude in the tool you chose, you pay per token on top of whatever you already spend.

We think that's a strategic mistake for Claude as a subscription, though not for Claude as a model. Claude is clearly good enough that the XDA writer still pays for API access to it. But 'good enough to rent by the token' is a worse place to be than 'the plan you never cancel.' Every time someone sets up an agent like this, ChatGPT Plus wins the sticky spot by default. Overrated: owning the whole stack. Underrated: being the subscription that works everywhere. Anthropic has real reasons to control how its plans get used. Its own terms tie advertised Pro and Max limits to ordinary individual use. That still doesn't change how it looks to the people paying.

Should you consolidate?

  • If you live in Claude Code and rarely switch models, Claude Pro or Max still makes sense, used in Anthropic's own tools.
  • If you hop between models daily, keep the one plan that signs into OpenCode and pay for the others per use.
  • Track your Claude API spend for a month before cancelling anything. Heavy use can cost more than a plan.
