Can't Find Duolingo Image Flashcards? Stop Looking for a Menu
Duolingo's new Image Flashcards can show up at the end of lessons, not in a menu. Here's where Chess Game Review lives, and why the suits don't matter.

Short answer
Image Flashcards don't have a button you can go and press. Duolingo says you "may see" them at the end of a lesson. Chess Game Review is in the Chess course's match history. In its October 19, 2026 update, Duolingo describes Image Flashcards as something that can appear when a lesson ends. It doesn't mention a settings toggle, and it doesn't promise the cards in every lesson. If you haven't seen one, that alone doesn't mean your account has a problem. Chess Game Review works differently. You open it yourself from your match history in the Chess course, after a game is finished. Duolingo says it is available on iOS and Android.Source: 3 new features that help boost your learning (Duolingo Blog) · 2026-10-20; Chess Game Review (Duolingo Blog) · 2026-10-20
What Duolingo announced on October 19
Duolingo's blog post, published October 19, 2026, introduces three things: Image Flashcards, Avatar Suits and Chess Game Review. Only two of them are learning tools. The post doesn't give a staged rollout schedule or a region list for any of the three. For Image Flashcards it also doesn't say which platforms or lessons get them. In practice, "new" here means "it might turn up," not "go and find it."

How Image Flashcards work when they show up

- Finish a language lessonDuolingo says the flashcards may appear at the end of a lesson. They aren't described as a separate mode you can open.
- Say the word out loudYou see a picture and say the matching word, with no answer choices. Duolingo's example is a picture of a book, where you say "libro" in Spanish.
- Skip if you can't talk right nowYou can skip a card, or pick the option saying you can't speak at the moment.
- Misses come backIf you get a word wrong, you see and hear the correct answer, and the card returns later for another try.
- Check the summaryAt the end, Duolingo shows the words you struggled with next to their translations.

Our take: Image Flashcards are the most important part of this update, and Duolingo is hiding them. Multiple choice has always been Duolingo's crutch. You can recognise the right word without being able to produce it. Making you say a word from a picture, with no options to choose from, tests whether you've actually learned it. So it's annoying that you can't open the cards on demand. Users will spend this week digging through Settings for something that isn't there. If Duolingo thinks spoken recall is valuable, it should let people practise it on purpose.
Where Chess Game Review is
- Open the Chess courseGame Review is part of Duolingo's Chess course. Duolingo first announced it on August 11, 2026, for iOS and Android.
- Go to match historyEvery completed match is saved in your match history. You start a review from there.
- Replay key momentsDuolingo groups key moments as good moves, missed opportunities and mistakes. For a missed opportunity, you can retry the move or work through a short exercise.
- Find the better move yourselfThe October post says Game Review returns you to the key position so you can look for a stronger move. Oscar then explains why a move worked or didn't.
- Earn XPDuolingo says you earn XP for reviewing your games. Per the October post, you can review as many games as you want, whether you played Oscar, friends or other players.

Not new since August
Chess Game Review isn't brand new. Duolingo announced it for iOS and Android on August 11, 2026, and its October 19 post features it again. If you only finished your first match recently, check your match history. A review needs a completed game.

Underrated pick: Game Review. Playing games teaches you less than looking back at your own mistakes. Duolingo making you find the better move yourself, instead of just showing you the engine's line, is the right instinct. Paying XP for review is a little cynical, but if XP gets beginners to look at their own blunders, fine.
Avatar Suits are a different thing
Avatar Suits are cosmetic outfits for your Duolingo Avatar. You collect them during limited-time events by making progress toward your learning goals, and each event has a window for earning its featured suits. Once you've collected a suit, Duolingo says it's yours, and you can switch between earned suits whenever you like. They aren't connected to how Image Flashcards or Game Review work.

Overrated: the suits. Time-limited collectibles are a well-worn way to drive engagement. They'll get the headlines and screenshots, but they won't teach you a single word. If you only have ten minutes, spend them in a lesson where a flashcard might appear, or on a review of your last chess game.
Before you assume something's broken
- Duolingo's post says you "may see" Image Flashcards at the end of a lesson. It doesn't promise them every time.
- The post doesn't mention a setting to turn Image Flashcards on.
- Chess Game Review needs a completed match in your Chess match history.
- Duolingo announced Game Review for iOS and Android specifically.
- You can only earn Avatar Suits during the limited-time event windows.

Why the terms matter here: Duolingo's terms let it change or discontinue parts of the service. A feature appearing in a blog post doesn't mean it will look the same for every user, or stay as it is. That's another reason not to treat a missing flashcard as an account fault.
