Your iPhone Can Drive Cursor Agents. Your Laptop Can't Nap.

Cursor's iOS app now pairs with your local agents. Here's how setup works, why closing the lid stops the work, and what Enterprise admins must switch on.

Short answer

Yes, you can watch and message your local Cursor agents from an iPhone. No, they won't keep working if your laptop goes to sleep.Cursor's October 6, 2026 changelog says you can now see and reply to local agents from the Cursor iOS app. To set it up, sign in on the phone, tap your computer, and approve the pairing request in the desktop app. The work still happens on your computer. Cursor says the machine must stay on and online, and that Keep this computer awake only works if the computer is plugged in with the lid open. So if you close the lid, the agent stops making progress.

What Cursor announced on October 6

The changelog entry is short. Computers signed into your account show up in the iOS app on their own. Tap one, approve the pairing on the desktop, and you get a list of your local agents. Tap an agent to see what it's doing or to send it a message. Cursor says it's available now in the Cursor iOS app. The entry only mentions iOS, so this guide doesn't assume Android support. Also, this isn't the first time remote control has come up: TestingCatalog reported back in June 2026 that the iOS app launched as a public beta for paid plans with a remote control option for local computers. The October 6 entry sets out the pairing flow and requirements in Cursor's own words.

  1. Update the desktop appCursor's iOS docs say Remote Control needs Cursor 3.9.8 or later on your computer. The app needs iOS 26.0 or later on iPhone, or iPadOS 26.0 or later on iPad.
  2. Sign in on your phoneDownload the Cursor iOS app and sign in with the same account you use on the desktop. Computers on that account appear in the app automatically.
  3. Pair the computerTap your computer in the app, then approve the pairing request in the Cursor desktop app.
  4. Open an agentYour local agents appear in a list. Tap one to see what it's doing or to send it a message.
  5. Keep the machine reachableTurn on Keep this computer awake. The changelog puts it under Remote Control in Cursor's desktop settings. The docs page says Settings > Agents, so check both if you don't see it. The computer has to be plugged in with the lid open.

Why closing the lid ends the session

Cursor's docs explain how the work is split. The agent loop runs in Cursor's cloud. Every tool call, including terminal commands, file edits, tests and git, runs on your computer. The docs say plainly that tool calls can't run while your computer is asleep or offline. Your phone is a remote control. It doesn't run anything itself.

Do you need cloud agents? The changelog says remote control doesn't require cloud agents. But the iOS docs say the app relies on Cloud Agents, which need cloud data storage, and that the agent loop itself runs in Cursor's cloud. In practice, your code and commands stay on your machine, but your session does go through Cursor's servers. If you really need to close the laptop, TestingCatalog reports that local sessions can be moved to the cloud so the work can continue.

Our take: this is a leash, not freedom

Let's be honest. 'Control your agents from your phone' sounds like coding from the beach. What you actually get is a laptop left plugged in and open on your desk while you check in from the coffee line. That's still useful. Steering a long refactor away from your desk beats coming back to an agent that has been stuck on a question for 40 minutes. But the people who'll be annoyed are laptop users who expected to close the lid and walk away. If you want true walk-away work, cloud agents are the real product, and local remote control is the cheaper, more private middle option. We'd say local remote control is underrated for desktop users and overrated for anyone who mostly codes on a laptop.

Enterprise teams: it's off until an admin turns it on

According to the changelog, remote control is on by default for everyone except Enterprise organizations. Enterprise admins can turn it on in Org settings > Security and identity > Remote control. The iOS docs add that Team and Enterprise admins control Remote Control access from the Cursor Dashboard. If you're on a company account and your computer doesn't show up in the app, ask your admin before assuming something is broken.

You are solely responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your account and password, and you accept responsibility for all activities that occur under your account.

Cursor Terms of Service (last updated September 3, 2026)

Why this matters here: a paired phone can send instructions to an agent whose tool calls run terminal commands and edit files on your computer. Cursor's terms make you responsible for everything done under your account. Lock your phone, and treat the pairing approval on the desktop as a real security decision.

If your computer doesn't appear in the app

  • Is the desktop app running and signed into the same account?
  • Is Cursor on the computer version 3.9.8 or later?
  • Is the computer awake, online, plugged in, and open?
  • On an Enterprise org, has an admin turned on Remote control?
  • Did you approve the pairing request in the desktop app?
