Short answer

Startups that applied for the free year of Claude Team may not get it. Within days of the launch, Anthropic said it was over capacity on that offer and on the $1,000 in API credits. On October 6, Anthropic expanded Claude for Startups to include a free year of Claude Team with up to five premium seats, plus $1,000 in API credits, TechCrunch reports. TechCrunch says companies qualify if they were founded in the last five years or raised funding in the last two. Anthropic's program page says bootstrapped startups can apply. The page's FAQ now says Anthropic received hundreds of thousands of applications in a few days, is over capacity on the Team and $1,000 credit offers, and will re-review all applications. If you've already claimed the offer, it stays in your account. If you haven't, the third-party Startup Stack, the office hours and the events are still the parts you can count on.

What Anthropic announced on October 6

TechCrunch reports that Anthropic launched the expanded program on October 6 during SF Tech Week. Approved startups would get a free year of Claude Team, Anthropic's paid plan for groups, with up to five premium seats. They would also get $1,000 in API credits, access to Claude Marketplace and virtual office hours with Anthropic's Applied AI team. Applications go through claude.com/programs/startups. Anthropic told TechCrunch it believes the benefits of AI will mostly reach people through companies that build on top of models.

Anthropic's own page adds more detail. The Claude Startup Stack bundles third-party discounts and credits it describes as worth up to $45,000, redeemed with codes in the Claude Console. Partners shown include ClickHouse ($5K in cloud credits), ElevenLabs (12 months free), Granola (3 months of Business for up to 10 seats) and Hex (6 months of Enterprise). The Applied AI office hours are 45-minute live sessions every other week. The page also says founders backed by a VC in Anthropic's partner network can get up to $100K in additional API credits, claimed through their investor.

The catch: the headline offer is over capacity

Anthropic's FAQ now says it didn't anticipate the demand. It reports hundreds of thousands of applications over the past few days and says it is over capacity on the Claude Team and $1,000 API credit offers. The company says it is reshaping the program, will re-review all applications, and that this may change the status of some of them. It aims to review every application within one week. Existing members keep the Startup Stack, office hours and events. Founders on Max or Team plans still get their monthly API credits in Console. A ZoomBangla report dated October 10 notes that the FAQ gives no date for bringing the two paused offers back.

Claude Startup Stack benefits are offered by independent third-party companies, not by Anthropic.

This line matters because the "up to $45,000" figure isn't an Anthropic credit. Each discount comes from a separate company with its own terms. Anthropic's re-review could change your status, but it doesn't control the partner offers.

Our take: the free seats were the real prize, and that's why they ran out

Let's be honest: $1,000 in API credits doesn't go far once you ship anything real. It's a demo budget. The prize was the free year of Team seats, because a small team that does all its writing, coding and planning in Claude for a year is unlikely to switch to ChatGPT or Cursor later. This was a customer-acquisition play, and judging by Anthropic's own FAQ, it worked better than Anthropic could afford. The '$45,000' Startup Stack is the most overrated part. It's a list of partner discounts, mostly for tools you may never use. Free office hours with Anthropic's applied AI team are underrated, if you show up with a real problem.

The part that annoys us is the re-review. Some founders were approved and then told their status might change. That's a bad way to treat the people you're trying to win over. If Anthropic wanted a program 'of, by and for startup founders,' it should have set clear limits before launch, not after the rush.

What to do now

  1. Already claimed it? Use itAnthropic says claimed offers aren't affected. Check your Console for credits and your workspace for Team seats.
  2. Applied but not claimed? Wait for the re-reviewAnthropic says it aims to review every application within one week. Watch your email for the decision before you change any plans or tools.
  3. Haven't applied? Apply for what's still offeredAnthropic's page still offers the Startup Stack, office hours and events to members. Don't count on the free Team year.
  4. VC-backed? Ask your investorFounders backed by a firm in Anthropic's VC partner network can claim up to $100K in API credits through that VC, according to the program page.

Don't plan around credits you don't have

Startup credits only work on the first-party Claude API through Console, not Bedrock or Vertex. If your stack runs through a cloud provider, the $1,000 won't help you there even if you get it.
