Our suggested diagnostic: open the original file and select one chart you can read yourself. Write down the viewer page number, chart title, axis labels and one value. Keep that note beside the chat. This gives you a small, checkable task instead of asking for a summary of an entire report.

Try a small excerpt with a verifiable question

Anthropic recommends dividing large documents into smaller sections. If you are permitted to upload the document, make a PDF excerpt containing the chart and its explanatory text. Retain the original so you can compare the result against it.

This prompt is an editorial suggestion, not a tested guarantee. Replace the bracketed page number before sending it. Ask about a single chart first. A broad question such as “what does this report show?” makes it harder to tell which parts of the file the answer used.

Check the answer against the original

Compare the response to your note. Look for swapped axes, an omitted unit, a mistaken time period or a statement that the chart does not support. If a label is unclear in your own viewer, use a clearer source copy instead of requesting a confident interpretation of unreadable material.

When the small example works, repeat the process for the passages relevant to your task. Keep the excerpt page number and the original page number together in your notes. That way, a colleague can find the same chart without having to reconstruct which file you uploaded.

A paid plan is not a diagnosis
