Claude Just Moved Into Google Docs. Is Gemini Still Needed?

Claude now edits Docs, Sheets and Slides from a sidebar on every paid plan. Who gets it, what it can't do yet, and why Gemini should be nervous.

Prices last read 2026-10-12

Short answer

Partly. Since October 6, Claude can read and edit the Doc, Sheet or Slides deck you have open, but only as a beta add-on with real limits.Anthropic launched the Claude for Google Workspace add-on as a public beta on all paid Claude plans (Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise). You install it from the Google Workspace Marketplace, open it under Extensions > Claude > Open Claude, and it works in a sidebar next to the file. It asks before each edit by default. Separate beta connectors also let Claude create and edit Google files from a normal Claude chat.

What actually launched on October 6

There are two separate pieces. The first is the add-on: a sidebar inside Docs, Sheets and Slides that reads the open file and your selection, then edits it in place. According to Anthropic, it can rewrite sentences and restyle headings in Docs, or propose changes as suggestion cards. In Sheets it can write formulas, build pivot tables and charts, and add tabs. In Slides it can build new slides from the deck's own layouts and flag overlapping or off-slide elements. The second piece is a set of beta Docs, Sheets and Slides connectors. You paste a file link into a Claude chat, or ask for a new file, and Claude edits it from there. On Team and Enterprise plans, an owner or primary owner has to turn the connectors on first.

Claude now works inside Google Docs, Sheets and Slides from a sidebar, available on every paid plan.

There are two edit modes. 'Ask before edits' is the default: Claude describes each action and waits for you to click Allow. 'Accept all edits' lets it make ordinary content changes without stopping. Even in that mode, it still pauses for links, images from web addresses and changes to file access. According to the help center, Claude cannot share the file, change ownership, or create menus or automations.

That line settles eligibility: free Claude accounts are not included. You also need a Google account that is allowed to install Marketplace apps. If your company blocks them, you'll see 'This application is not allowed by your administrator', and only a Workspace admin can clear that message.

The fine print that will annoy you

Beta limits Anthropic lists itself

  • It works only on the open file, and the sidebar has to stay open while a task runs.
  • It runs only in Chrome, Edge and Safari, and a single operation can run for up to six minutes.
  • Docs: it can't read or resolve comments, can't accept or reject suggestions, and makes its edits directly rather than as tracked suggestions.
  • Sheets: Connected Sheets (BigQuery) tabs can't be read until you extract the rows to a regular tab.
  • Slides: charts it creates are static images, not linked charts.
  • Chat history is stored in your browser, per file, and isn't synced between devices.
  • No HIPAA coverage: Anthropic says not to use it with protected health information.

Privacy check before you point it at work files

For Pro and Max, data from the add-on falls under Anthropic's Consumer Terms and Privacy Policy. Team and Enterprise fall under commercial terms. Anthropic says it does not train on this content. The add-on asks Google for only two permissions: showing the sidebar, and viewing and managing the one file it was opened in. It does not request access to Drive, Gmail or Calendar.

Who's affected and what to do

The add-on is still in beta and has limits, so check what it can do before you count on it for a task.
  1. Pro or Max subscriberInstall Claude from the Google Workspace Marketplace and reload any open files. One install covers Docs, Sheets and Slides. Leave 'Ask before edits' on until you trust it with a given file.
  2. Team or Enterprise memberA Google Workspace super admin can install it for the whole domain or for selected groups. A Claude owner has to enable the Docs, Sheets and Slides connectors before you can use them from chat.
  3. Free Claude userNeither the add-on nor the connectors are available to you. The beta is for paid plans only.

Claude vs. Gemini, on Google's own turf

Gemini is already built in. Google advertises Gemini in the side panel of Gmail, Docs, Sheets and Drive, and lists Gemini app chat among Business Standard plan features. 9to5Google's launch report says Gemini can do much of the same work and pitches Claude's add-on at people who already prefer Claude. Anthropic's own announcement doesn't mention Gemini.

Our take: Gemini's home-field advantage isn't gone, but it has stopped being a moat. For years, 'it's already in Docs' was the best argument for Gemini, and arguably the only one that didn't depend on benchmarks. Now anyone who already pays for Claude gets an assistant in that same sidebar, with the same models, skills and connectors they use in the chat app. If you've been paying for both just to have AI inside your documents, that's one less reason to keep Gemini. The add-on is also more careful than we expected: approval by default and a two-permission scope are good choices that Google should be under pressure to match.

What's overrated: the idea that this kills Gemini on day one. Claude can't touch comments, can't work with suggestion mode in Docs, forgets your chat if you switch laptops, and only knows the one file you have open. Gemini works across Gmail and Drive, and in many Workspace plans you've already paid for it. What's underrated: the connectors. Editing a Sheet from a regular Claude chat, without opening Google at all, may change your habits more than the sidebar does. Our verdict: if Claude is your main AI, try the beta this week. If you're on a Workspace plan that already includes Gemini, don't cancel anything until these limits come off.
