Export Claude chat history before deleting a chat
Find Claude’s data export, check account eligibility, and inspect the saved conversation before deciding whether to delete the original.

Individual Free, Pro, and Max accounts can export. The iOS and Android apps cannot initiate exports. For Team and Enterprise, only the organization’s Primary Owner has self-service export access, through Organization settings > Data and privacy > Export Data.

Claude documents conversation data and account user data as export contents. Its export guide does not specify filenames, a file format, or an attachment-by-attachment inventory. It also says exports cannot be imported into another personal Claude account.

Suggested inspection before deletion
- Keep the original download and inspect a separate copy. If it is an archive, extract that copy before examining its contents.
- Locate the intended conversation using a distinctive phrase from your own prompt. For example, search for “September workshop seating plan” if that phrase appears in your chat.
- Compare the saved conversation with the still-open original: check the opening prompt, an exchange in the middle, and the final response you want to preserve.
- Check any essential code, tables, attachments, or generated files separately. Do not assume that finding the conversation text proves every associated item is saved.
- Close and reopen the saved material. Stop here if you cannot locate or read an essential part; leave the original chat in place.
You should not rely on any Outputs or Actions without independently confirming their accuracy.

That clause concerns reliance on generated content; it does not define export completeness. Our suggestion is to compare the saved messages directly with the original conversation, rather than ask Claude to recreate or summarize the chat as your preservation check.

When your check is complete, the documented web deletion route is the conversation’s ⋮ menu > Delete, followed by confirmation. Deletion removes the conversation from visible history immediately. For organization exports, Anthropic explicitly excludes messages, files, and projects deleted before the export was initiated.
