Anthropic's $42B Loss: Your Claude Bill Isn't the Real Risk
Anthropic's IPO draft shows a $42B loss. Will Claude Pro and Max get pricier? Probably not soon. Here's what we'd watch instead.

Short answer
Nothing in the reported prospectus says Claude Pro or Max prices are going up. Anthropic's terms do let it change usage limits, though, so watch your limits more closely than your price.According to Reuters, subscriptions brought in about $789 million of Anthropic's roughly $4.6 billion in 2025 revenue. Usage-based revenue brought in about $3.8 billion. Your $20 plan is not what investors are buying. Anthropic's own help pages say it may cap your usage "at our discretion." That clause is the thing to watch.Source: Reuters via Euronext: Anthropic IPO prospectus lays bare deep dependence on Big Tech partners · 2026-10-01; Claude Help Center: What is the Max plan? · 2026-10-01
What the prospectus actually shows
First, a correction to how this story is spreading: the press has been reporting on a draft. Anthropic hasn't publicly filed its S-1 yet. TechCrunch reported on September 28 that the Financial Times and Reuters had seen the document. Fortune calls it a leak to Reuters. According to those reports, Anthropic's 2025 revenue was about $4.6 billion, roughly twelve times its 2024 revenue. Capital Brief gives the exact figures: $4.59 billion in revenue, up from $386 million, against an $8.06 billion operating loss.

The $42 billion headline is mostly accounting. The Motley Fool reports that about $34 billion of the net loss is an accounting charge tied to the rising value of convertible shares. It isn't cash spent on servers. The cash costs are still large. Capital Brief reports $7.33 billion in compute and infrastructure spending in 2025 and $518 billion in future cloud, compute and infrastructure obligations. It also reports that the listing is expected after the November US midterms. 2026 looks better so far: the Fool reports Q2 2026 revenue of $11.5 billion and an adjusted operating profit of $559 million.

Why 'subscribers will pay for it' is the lazy take
The obvious argument goes like this: big losses plus public shareholders means you pay more. The numbers don't support it. Reuters reports that usage-based revenue was about $3.8 billion in 2025 and subscriptions were about $789 million, which is less than a fifth of the total. Anthropic expects consumption revenue to stay "the substantial majority." Reuters also reports that two unnamed customers each accounted for 12% of revenue.

Anthropic's recent moves on limits have also gone the other way. On May 6, 2026, it doubled Claude Code's five-hour rate limits on Pro, Max, Team and seat-based Enterprise plans, citing new SpaceX compute capacity. On September 22, alongside Opus 5.5, it raised five-hour usage limits on those plans again and gave subscribers a rate limit reset they can save for later.

Our take
Fear of a price hike is overblown. Fear of limits isn't. A company with a lot of committed compute wants that compute used, and the September 22 limit increase looks like Anthropic competing for engagement, not cutting back. What should actually annoy you is that you have no say in any of it. If compute gets tight or a new model is expensive to run, the quickest fix for Anthropic is a weekly cap, not a press release about raising the $20 price. That's also why the ChatGPT vs. Claude price comparison misses the point: on both, the limit is the real price.
we may limit your usage in other ways, such as weekly and monthly caps or model and feature usage, at our discretion.

This is why limits matter more than price. The same help page says Max plans already have a weekly limit across all models, on top of a session limit that resets every five hours. Anthropic can change limits without announcing a new price.

What we'd do as a Pro or Max subscriber
- Use the saved rate limit reset from the Opus 5.5 launch before it expires.
- Before you commit to a longer plan, note how far a typical week gets you today so you can spot quiet cuts later.
- Max is monthly only, so if limits get tighter you can drop down a tier without being locked in.
- Read the real S-1 when Anthropic publishes it. A draft reported by the press isn't the final document.
