Grok in 2026: a live feed of X with a studio attached
People don't use Grok for the same things they use other chatbots for. Its real edge is still that it can read live X discussion, so it's good for questions like "what is happening right now and who is saying it". Around that it has grown into a workbench: web research, file analysis, voice chat, help with code through Grok Build, connectors to email, files and calendars, and Grok Imagine for images and short videos with sound.
If you mainly need a coding partner, be sceptical. Musk reportedly told his own staff that Grok is losing the AI race to Anthropic. Buy Grok for real-time context and media. Don't buy it hoping for the best model on every task.
What changed recently
June 2026: paid plans moved from separate daily quotas to one weekly usage pool shared by Chat, Imagine, Voice and Build. July 2026: Grok 4.5 shipped. Days later, a researcher disclosed that Grok Build had uploaded users' whole code repositories to the cloud without permission, and xAI released Build as open source after the criticism. August 2026: Grok Bot launched in beta, Grok 4.6 arrived, and the company was formally renamed SpaceXAI. On August 24 users reported nonsensical answers, which the company blamed on a rare temporary generation glitch. September 2026: Build gained cross-session memory and Grok 4.7 was released. By then the consumer lineup also included a SuperGrok Plus tier above SuperGrok.
Who should share, and who should pay full price
Be clear about this first: xAI's consumer terms have said you may not share your account credentials or make your account available to anyone else, and that xAI may suspend or delete an account without notice for a breach. A shared plan can conflict with those terms. The risk is losing access in the middle of your subscription, along with your chat history. We don't recommend breaking the terms. Read them and decide for yourself.
Paying full price makes sense for anyone who uploads private code, client files or personal documents, uses Grok for work, or relies on Imagine and Build heavily. Because the pool is weekly and shared across products, other people on the same account can use up your capacity.
Before you buy
Check which tier you are actually getting. SuperGrok, Plus and the others differ in limits and media features.
Ask how the weekly usage pool is split, and what happens when it runs out before the week resets.
Assume other users can see your conversations. Never paste passwords, private code or anything you would not post publicly.
